Fabia Estate - mpg?

Featured Replies

Yeah...it will do much better but it's far to new to worry about the fuel consumption yet. My advice if you were to ask...don't use cruise control too much until it's run in. It's the best way to glaze the cylinder bores and ruin future fuel economy and power output.

My 2.0CR Passat didn't reach optimum fuel economy until over 10k miles.

When I first got it it used to struggle to get 50mpg taking it steady in summer and now with 20k miles in 18 months I can average above that mid winter without trying so things will improve.

Still need to try harder to get the economy than you had to in the older 1.9PD units though. I think the CR units like to be warmed through and have their legs streched to get good mpg.

Was why we swappped the 1.9PD Fabia for a petrol Fabia this time, only 4k miles a year on short runs suits the petrol much better than a CR diesel.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice. I was really just playing with the new toys on it. Won't get much chance to use cruise control outside of holiday season. But saw your other post full of good tips about running in - so I'll try to follow those.

From home to Eurotunnel last week, 222 miles, and achieved 63 mpg.

Rarely dropped below 70, and quite often above, except for two comfort stops and sections of 50 mph roadworks on the M1 and M25.

From France today in high winds, rain, one hour and 50 minutes delay at Dartford Crossing, 90 litres of wine extra, bottles of Brandy and some cheese all slowing us down and we averaged 54.4 mpg.

Drives well, very stable in high winds, packs a load of stuff onboard and I'm very pleased with the car.

It is good to hear you are very pleased with your car and your figures are what I would have expected.

I got just over 60mpg on a 175 mile run from the Midlands to Devon with about 130 miles on the M5 then A38 and the remainder most single carriageway roads. Coming back I came off the M5 at Stroud then normal roads with about 58mpg overall.

On a cross-country run even if light traffic but having to slow / stop for junctions, towns etc and rarely reaching more than 50mph I find the mpg is around 15% less than at a steady 70mph.

So far every time I have worked out my mpg over a few tankfulls it is within 1mpg of the computed long-term average.
