Trouble starting in the morning!

Featured Replies

Hi! I have a Octy 1.9TDI and every morning I have a problem starting the car. It takes 3-5 tries of cranking the engine for it to start. However after that its ok. Later during the day I do not have any problem and it starts with one go. What could be the problem and do I need to replace the glowplugs? What will be the cost of the glowplugs and is there any part number or place where I can buy it.

lazy starter motor and as engine is still cold its harder to turn over

exactly the same issue i had before

But does not seem to be the starter motor at all. It just doesn't fire up!

It will be starter trust me seen it loads its not able to spin cold engine fast enough hence when warm it starts ;-)

Hi,

Glow plugs are about £18 each from a dealer, but can be sourced cheaper elsewhere, cant give you a part number without knowing the year of the car and engine code.

It would be better to get the engine on a diagnostic tester to determine the the cause for poor starting before spending on parts you may not need.

Or it could be a slightly dodgy battery, CTS at fault or dodgy crimp joints.

Well mines was as rough as a bagers ar53 this morning took me about 3 mins to get it to tick over, think it's my starter motor never did sound right when i bought it but its not failed yet, so no point in changing it, it's just the cars character

That sounds like glow plugs / glow plug timers / timing a bit out to me....

well mat i shall give it a look over, thanks my friend for info.

Prithvi - I'm having a similar issue at the moment (see the 1.9 TDi 130 starting problems thread). I've changed the battery, glow plugs and coolant temp sensor.

If your glow plug light goes out within a couple of seconds, not a CTS issue I'd imagine. If you really want to replace your glow plugs, I got a set of 4 from Camberley Auto Factors (NGK ones) for £34 or so.
