New Battery

Featured Replies

As the battery was the original (6years 8months old, yikes!!). I realised it was quickly coming to the end of its life and didn’t want to push my luck this winter.

So yesterday I bit the bullet and bought a new battery (Bosch S5-005) £120 from Halfords (Iknow it can be bought cheaper from XYZ , my choice ok lol).

Anyway I did a few searches here related to changing the battery, things to do or not etc and not having a “slave battery” I could not use a Memory Saver device.

I opened the drivers door window, all doors shut, nothing switched on, ignition key in my pocket lol.

Removed battery box cover and tied the plastic fuse /terminal plate back out of the way, removed battery clamp bolt and plate (at front). Remember to refit it.

Removed the old battery, (neutral off first quickly to avoid any arcing), then as before the positive lead,

Smeared some copper grease on the new battery posts, refitted the leads (positive lead first, neutral last), battery box cover etcf ingers crossed,

turned key and heard some new sounds clicks etc and started the car.

I tried the “single shot” front window function. It was the only thing that didn’t work, radio, central locking all ok, reset time on the clock and went

for a 10 mile drive at different speeds.Took the revs up to 4k a couple of times, also drove slowly (helping the ecu re-learn the engine demands).

Got back to the house, tried the front window “single shot” function, that worked, spooky!!

The bottom line is, its not as off-putting as it seems, if I can do it anyone can, just be careful, avoid creating any arcs when removing and refitting the power leads, and avoid shorting anything out (tie the leads backout of the way when removing /replacing the battery.

For Info: original battery was :- AKUMA part number :- 1J0–915–105AC (60ah / 280a)

The single shot window thing normally has to be reset after disconnecting the battery by holding the key in the doorlock in the "locked" position until the windows all go up, then keeping it there for a few seconds. It then learns the "shut" position of the window and the single shot window shutting will work. Not sure how yours did it though unless you locked the car at some point.

I know I remember reading your post on the subject. I did lock and unlock the car using the zapper. I have never put the key in any locks apart from the ignition of course

NB: All the windows were shut at the time.
