GAP Insurance

Featured Replies

Normally I would not bother with gap insurance but the dealer has offered it to me dor £249 for 3 years cover. Sounds a fair deal to me but wondered what others thought.

Also been offered a fourth year of warranty for £349, given the problems people are talking about with the DSG is this worthwhile? Not seen the small print yet so not sure what is excluded.

whatever price the dealer offers initally can be haggle quite a bit.

a fourth year warranty, if a direct continuation of the standard warranty is always worth considering. however if the 4th year warranty is through a third party company then i would read the small print VERY carefully.

A Ford dealer i went to offered me gap insurance for £399, i then said i could get it from a broker for £130, and he said no worries and priced matched it! that's quite a scary mark-up.

ALSO don't forget there are different types of GAP insurance, some are virtually useless if you are putting down a decent deposit.

The Only GAP insurance i would be interested in is the NEW CAR value GAP.

say you buy a £15,000 and crash it after 1 and a half years, say you still owe £10000, the insurance pays you £9,500. the GAP policy you want would give you another £5,500. but some GAP policies would only give you £500.

There are loads of guides online about GAP because i think it's one of the least understood insurances.

The £249 includes a nice fat commission.

Haggle or get a quote yourself from an insurance company.

I was offered it on my Range Rover for £250 and haggled them down to £150.

Dealers earn a fair amount out of GAP and Superguard when selling cars.

I always get mine from www.ala.co.uk for about £100

I bought mine from ALA which ended up costing me under £110.

It's definitely worth it but haggle on the price as it seems expensive

If you google 10% ala discount code you will find one I not on my pc atm

ala seems to be popular, my policy cost me £90

Never really got my head around GAP, since we all accept that (virtually all) cars depreciate. To me its like a woman buying a jar of expensive face cream and putting it in the cupboard "just in case". That said, when I have been offered such things, the "Business Managers" (or whatever you want to call them) always come back with a better offer. Also worth asking who underwrites it, as I was offered a "SMART" insurance scheme thst the dealer group had branded as their own and which was available on better terms direct once I'd asked the right questions. Smoke and mirrors...

Got an online quote and can get better cover (price of new replacement car rather than the price paid) for half the cost! Unless the dealer matches this then I'll go elsewhere.

Thanks for the advice.

What's not to get?

Pay 15k for car, 2years 11months down the line you write off car. Insurance pay you 8k. With gap they will pay you the 7k shortfall. Meaning you can buy a brand new car again. This basically insures against depreciation in the event of an accident.

+1 for ala or click4gap

ALA.CO.UK Discount :)!

If you go via Topcashback you get 10.3% cashback OR Quidco are giving you 11% (But they take £5 a year off you and topcashback dont)

If you then also use discount code 'PG18V' when your on the site (make sure you go via topcashback) you get 10% off the purchase price too!

There's my help for the day :)
