Power Capacitor..

Featured Replies

Ok guys,

I'm running a 1200w amp and 1400w subwoofer. Now, im not a massive fan of too much bass but i do like a nice beat. Now i had an issue with the headlights / dash lights dimmming when the bass kicks in. Obviously because it required more ampage.

Now i purchased a 2.4 farad capacitor as they didnt have any 1 farad ones in stock.

My concern is that im only using 10 AWG power cable to the amp. Will it be ok to run this size cable with the 2.4 farad capacitor?

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

Thanks.

it you have 2600 wrms, 10awg is not ok. upgrade the cables to bigger ones

where did you get 2600w RMS from??

im not a huge fan of power caps a second battery is a far better choice in my opinion.

what power RMS are you running?

10awg cable is far to small id run nothing smaller then 4awg on a half decent install

about your light dimming a lot of the time this can be sorted by upgrading your earths. battery earth to the chassis, find a better earth for the amp and maybe even a better earth for the alternator. only once you have done that id look into caps and second batteries

Very true look into something they call 'the big 3' upgrade, I'm currently building my system ATM I'm running a kilowatt of power, iv got 0awg cabling from engine bay to cabin, the big 3 all with 0awg and a upgraded alternator (180amp) off a passat and I only get a little light diming on full tilt, bigger battery soon though :)

i never went as far as 0awg cable as i couldn't be bothered to try and run it through my car. i did have very good 4awg cable and a second battery with a 150a alternator. i was running 2 12" subs and 1100w RMS mono block with no problems with dimming lights at all

i realised i mis-read. i thought there's 2 amps.

Im running this amp....

I had the exact same setup in my old 306 GTi-6 and never experienced the headlights dimming and the amp was turned up higher than it is now.

Ive been there with stupid amounts of bass pumping and for me, its really not needed :giggle:

I've been running the same wiring kit for the last 4 years on 3 different cars and its been fine up untill the octavia. I just dont want to blow anything up if i install this powercap to my existing powercable OR have the cable burn out?

I used to run 2 x alpine 500w RMS monoblock amps, a 4 channel alpine amp and a random 4 channel amp in my old volvo and have 2 batteries in boot on a split charge system along with 2 power caps, carn't remember how big they were but my lights still used to dim on full boot,

It worked quiet well with engine off though and could get a nearly an hour before it flatten batteries in boot, but then i just used to start it up and charge them back up again

I wouldn't go with 10 awg, its way too small for these types of projects. But I wouldn't go with 0awg either which wouldn't be good I think for the sound system as you might get a lot of noise. If you have space, you could use two 2.4 farad caps in series so that the total cap value becomes 1.2 farad. The one in the link, looks really great but looks like it has been discontinued. So, how is your sound system now? Hopefully, it’s not as loud as you mentioned earlier.
