ASR

Featured Replies

Is there anyway to turn ASR off completely? Every single time I get in the car I have to turn it off and when you sometimes forget it's really embarrassing if you go to pull away quickly and it bogs down.

My ideal car would be to have it permanently off and no dash light warning you that it's off

Can anyone think of a way to do this?

Can be done with vagcom apparently

wow

i wonder if the light stays off?

Probably will do if you're recoding it. Best way is to try it and find out. You could always physically remove the LED if it stays on.

Just looked at a log from my Fabia a couple of weeks ago and I'd be dubious about doing it. Everything suggests that the original code should be a pretty high number (for example 13404) whereas my coding is listed as 00008 which doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere. However my ASR definitely works as I got it on a week or so ago.

i think the led is used for other stuff though

Only time I've ever seen the light come on apart from the initial start up check is when it flases and the ASR is cutting power.

Should have bought a car with ESP :D

Should have bought a car with ESP :D

my mate has ESP on his fabia and doesnt rate it, he turns it off every time he gets in the car too and isnt even mapped

Slightly off topic but what is the difference between ASR & ESP. I have ESP on my Fabia but never really thought about it.

Cheers

ESP is awesome especially at this time of year

Esp is traction control

Asr is anti slip regulation a basic form of esp but is quite frankly terrible

I find mine quite handy. Doesn't bog down at all. Maybe you're not giving it enough stick off the line Luke? ;)

I'm guessing it's the same as the difference between TCS and ESP on the A4 platform. TCS is basic traction control, when you spin the wheels then the engine can cut the power briefly while they find some grip again. ESP is that, plus I think each wheel can be braked individually so power can be "cut" to one wheel (by applying the brake) while the other is allowed to spin to find traction. Plus ESP can brake the rear wheels individually if it seems like you're losing control of the rear end whereas TCS is only on the front wheels.

Don't pull away so quickly  or if you must control your right foot.. IMO it sounds like your heavy footed and can't drive the car correctly

TCS and ASR are the same thing.

It often incorporates EDL (Electronic Differential Lock) where it brakes the wheel spinning faster than the other.

TCS/ASR cuts engine power to reduce wheel spin. If you turn TCS/ASR off the EDL continues to work.

I have only ever once felt the engine "bog down" and that was pulling onto A64 on a short slip road in second with some loose stones on the road. It seemed to take an age to get going and the engine to rev.

I find it often helps to get going quick. If it is interfeering too much then try using slightly less gas... you will probably find you get going quicker rather than foot right to the floor and waisting all the energy in burning rubber or having the ASR kick in.

Phil

Mine kicks in a fair bit. But I put it down to cheap tyres and bad driving technique. Still getting the hang the vRS, completely different to my old car.

This is a mkI Fabia... with an LSD fitted. (Limited Slip Differential)

Oh yeh. So the EDL doesn't apply to the OP then!

I don't always read through peoples signatures... especially when they have so many mods ;)

I use to be heavy footed and hated the asr. Since getting into advanced driving I never notice it kick in anymore.

All the more reason to want to disable the EDL though, surely? If you already have a mechanical device to do the job properly, the last thing you want is for the ECU to be trying to apply a cut down version in situations where it thinks the car might need assistance, I'd rather my ECU just left well alone and left the proper mechanical diff to do its thing at the right point.

Is EDL definitely present on cars which only have ASR though? I thought EDL was a partner feature to ESP, as ASR-only cars don't have the ability to brake the wheels, only cut engine power?

Yes... Foot to the floor and hope for the best isn't always the best/fastest way to get going!

Depends on the road surface you're on etc of course.

It often feels like I am making more progress by driving steady and changing between 2000 and 3500 rpm (using the torque of engine).

Yes maybe it does still work unless it has been disabled with vag-com in which case he probably wouldn't be asking how to disable it!

Mine definitely has it. Mine has TCS which is just a different name for ASR fitted to the Fabia I believe.

Yeah, SEAT term it TCS while Skoda use ASR, but it's just different names for the same technology. Luke only asked about turning off the ASR part though rather than the EDL as well, but having read up a bit the EDL is actually a "lesser" feature than ASR anyway.

You'd think so, but at Santa Pod my car was only very slightly faster pulling off with the electronic helper off.

So the LSD is still helping as the electronics kick in less.

I know Luke has issues with the electronic helper, he runs with it off, but on my car it doesn't seem a problem.

Maybe this is a side effect of the 888 tyres I run, as there is more grip in dry/track conditions?
