DSG trouble?

Featured Replies

Don't know whether this is anything to be worried about but I was approaching a roundabout this morning and knocked it in to manual mode to get ready for a quick exit, I dropped from 4th to 2nd and went to go but it didn't, so I thought maybe it wasn't in gear ready so I stopped it changed to 1 itself wen I went to pull of it wouldn't move just revved as if it was in neutral, so I tried putting it back to D and it came up D1 tried to go again, nothing! So I turned it off then it obviously wouldn't start coz it wasn't in park, so I quickly put it in then started up back down to D and off I went??

Tried it in manual a bit later on and it worked fine? Anyone had this before?

Loads of threads about this dude. Have a search.

Yes. It happened to me 2 times during my first days with the car when I was still understanding how the DSG works. My explanation for this, and I have to say your description matches it a lot, is that sometimes, you may decide to manually shift down, just a 0.000001 sec before the DSG would shift down as well and there it may get stuck. It's not every time, the synchronisation has to be very very good. So instead of dropping from 4th to 2nd, If the DSG was just about to shift down as well, what it did was to drop from 4th to 3rd (it did that alone) and then from 3rd to 1st (due to your 2 clicks). Maybe it didn't actually shift down to 1st but this made it stall.

It has never happened again and I have the car 6 months. I believe I could trigger it again If I tried but the thing is that If I have already started to brake and decelerate for quite a few meters, I will leave the box shift itself and then, just after it shifting down one gear I may manually intervene. If I have foreseen the deceleration in time, then I manually shift down 2-3 gears with no problem. It's either the one or the either however. You either have to be anticipating and do the shift downs yourself, or you have to let the DSG make the first shift down, and then you can intervene.

My view on this is like two people wanting to pass through a door almost at the same time. What do you do? You either increase your pace in order to reach the door first and pass or, If you both arrive at the same time, you let the other guy pass first... As I said before, having this in mind it has never happened to me again after this first week.

Thanks for the replies, seen problems on here before but didn't find anything like my symptoms only people with EML on or noises.

I understand what you mean about the box changing at the same time, I've done it before when I've clicked down and the box has dropped one too, but it's always sorted itself out, I guess this time it got a bit messed up lol

Have a look at my threads. I've had it drop out of first numerous times approaching junctions. Dropped out of second when attempting an over take on a stationary lorry and also had the box in limp mode aswell.

Will do, cheers mate! Hopefully it was just a one off

I think you just confused it! Best thing is to put it in sport approaching a roundabout (drops to the right gear) or leave it in D and when you boot it, the car should 'go'

Definitely confused it lol! I'll try the sport method next time, it's something I don't do very often as its really good to be left on its own, but thought if I was in 2nd I can shoot straight out, I could have booted it but then it would drop too many, start to wheelspin or not boot it enough to drop a gear an not accelerate enough

Next time I'll just stop lol

I use Sport approaching a roundabout or drop a couple of gears with the paddles.

If you wish to create the Higgs boson affect use the Paddles in Sport, Plant foot, breath slowly and smile. emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I drive my vRS in D mode most of the time, and S mode when overtaking or fancy some fun!

The problem I have every now and then is, when coming off a motorway and start to go round the roundabout, it sticks in first gear and just free revs! My response to this is to flick the 'up' paddle a few times to over-ride the problem.

It's annoying, but because it doesn't happen very often, only on a roundabout, I have just come to accept it's a trait of the gearbox.

In addition to the paddles, I also go slow around the roundabout after coming off the motorway and this works fine too.

At least you're not alone with this problem ,I shouldn't worry about it too much. :)

I don't bother with sport, iknow it slow down changing, so I preempt it by changing down with the paddles manually to get it in the correct gear before the roundabout rather than expecting it to suddenly drop 3 gears in one lump when I hit the loud paddle Don't ever use the tiptronic anymore as it gets a bit funny for some reason.
