Top up coolant with XStream?

Featured Replies

Coolant light came on(and then went off again after a restart), coolant level is almost minimum. Can I just top up with this stuff?

Its Comma XStream G40 Antifreeze and in the description it says "It exceeds exacting Quality Standard, BS-6580-1992 and meets AFNOR NFR 15-601 (except Reserve Alkalinity) and it is also known as G12++, this is the Volkswagen reference code, which is printed in the manufactures handbook."

Yes but it's mega expensive.

The correct stuff at your dealer is far cheaper than that.

Yeah but dealer is 18 miles away, Halfords is 5. :(

Also £24.99 for 5 litres, is the dealer price much different?

You need to be sure what's in it at the moment is G12++ if it's last coolant change was at a main dealers they should have put G12++ in it (it's pink/purple) but if it's been serviced at an independent garage it could have any old coolant in it, and you don't want to mix different types of coolant.

I think last time I bought genuine G12++ I got it from here: http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1269

I think at the dealers it's a quid or so dearer than that so price isn't much different to the Halfords stuff if you're buying 5 litres

It is pink and the last item I can see on the service history is in March 08 "G12A8FM1 2E G12COOLADD1.5LTR" so should be ok to mix with G12++. :)

I bet the alot cheaper HEPU G12 coolant do the job in the same way.I had this in my car for 4 years, and is still nice pink color. 5 pounds 1.5L

I was looking at the Halfords stuff a while ago, and I worked it out to be pretty much the same price pre litre as the proper VAG stuff the dealer sells.

G40: Blue label stuff: VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley and Lamborghini (TL774-G) for cars from 2005 onwards.

There is also a G48 version: Green label stuff: suitable for BMW, Mercedes Benz, Volvo & pre-1996 VW group cars.

So what happens to cars which fall between 1996 and 2005?

I imagine the blue label stuff is fine to use as it's the equivalent of G12++ and that replaced G12 which was in the Mk1 Octys 1998-2005 when they came out of the factory.

The green label stuff is probably the equivalent of G11 which was in VAG cars up to '98

Got the Halfords stuff now, price difference is negligible not worth the hassle hunting round or ordering online. :)

Although now I need distilled water.....where the hell do I get that.
