jerking noise in fifth gear

Featured Replies

Hello there

I drive 2011 skoda octavia II FL 2.0 CR TDI equipped with 5 speed manual gear box. My car has done only 8000 miles, Past 10 days when I am driving in 5th gear maintaining 45 miles/hour the RPM is roghly between 1250-1350rpms the car starts vibrating followed by jerks which is felt in steering and under the seat( "grr - grr - grr - grr"). I have to switch gear down to 4th or accelerate to 50 miles/hour in fifth gear. What could possibly be wrong with my car, I have doubt on clutch or fly wheel. Please help me out.

Regards

Alam

My car would be jerky and unwilling at those low revs as well. But I have the PD engine and a six speed gearbox. I keep my revs at 1500 or above if any acceleration is needed.

That's just the way VBH speaks, I'm afraid.

Hello there

someone told me that it could be the DPF clogging because of low rpms.

Speaking in riddles will be wasted on someone from India :dull:

For the benefit of the OP:

Fifth Gear is a UK motoring program on the television and Vicki Butler-Henderson (otherwise known as VBH) is one of the presenters.

45mph in 5th should be OK in a five speed as long as you don't need rapid acceleration. As its under warranty I'd get it checked out.

Change up a gear between 1500-1800 Rpm your revs are far too low and risk damage to engine/clutch/gearbox - this is obviously terrain dependant, if you are going downhill you can change up a gear earlier, if going uphill you will need a few more revs. 1250-1350 is far too low.

modern deisel engines can perform in gear at tick over / idle rev's actually, older engines perhaps not i have attended various eco driver training sessions ran by the police, they suggest you run a deisel in gear at idle speed and let the car drive itself (rolling in gear) with minimal / no use of the accelarator.

check this link:

http://www.ecodrive.org/en/what_is_ecodriving-/the_golden_rules_of_ecodriving/

you can run the car in 5th at 30mph easily, 6th at 40 but when the engine starts to labour then you change up.

I dont know what is causing the juddering, the engine should be fine at those rev's / gears i would be having a chat with your local dealer / garage.

Yep you can run a diesel in gear at idle speed, but I wouldn't like to think of what this is doing to the DMF!!

Didn´t even know the 2.0tdi was available with 5 speed.

If it´s like the 1.6tdi, donnot go to fifth bebow 1400rpm, any lower only in straight line and slowly on pressing gas pedal.

Like said use only 5 gear when cruising over 50mph/85kmh
