Awful 3G coverage near Scarborough

Featured Replies

I'm with Vodafone and the data coverage here is carp. I can only get Edge at home, and at work (Scarborough) I can get G (gprs?) about 15% of the time, and H about 15% of the time. The other 70% the phone selects 3G which basically means "forget it". The phone will sit there for ages on 3G, with no data being transferred, and eventually time out. In realistic terms this means that for about 70% of the time I get no data coverage at all.

Any other Vodafone users in North Yorkshire with rubbish data connections?

Have you tried one of these at home?

I've still got one that I used to use when I was on vodafone and it seemed to do the trick.

At home (i.e. in the house) I connect to my wireless network so that's ok. What I should have said was "in the area where I live". My bad.

Which phone?

We use Vodafone at work & the techs I work with struggle from in various places from Scarborough down in to Hull to get a decent signal

This site is really useful and could help if you decide to jump from the vodafone ship.

Handy site. Thanks.

That's why I like three.

Their coverage is good and because they are a pure 3G network if you have signal you have 3G internet (always get the "H").

Also my mum and her partner used to be on Vodafone but found the coverage where they live (Tadcaster) terrible and around York. They have now switched to three for both their mobiles and for their MiFi through which they get 7mbs!

Voodofone have the best coverage for voice, but not great for data.

Three are the fastest for data if you can get coverage,

So I have sims for voodo and 3 and an unlocked dongle. If all else fails use firefox with image block add on. You can actually use the internet on a GPRS connection using text only.

That doesn't really make their coverage good though. They might still only have 80% coverage, they certainly don't work in my parents village, but where they do have coverage it's 3G. I'd rather have a network with 99.9% coverage, even if it's 80% 3G, 19.9% 2G. At least the phone would be usable for calls and texts as well, it's not all about net access...

www.opensignalmaps.com can be worth a look as well, this is data populated by smartphone apps and based on actual recorded signals, rather than just locations of towers (so can pick up any unusual blackspots caused by interference/land layout/etc. Trouble is unless you live in a populated area with people actively using the app, the data can be pretty spotty...

That's true but the only times I haven't had coverage is when everybody else on other networks doesn't have any coverage either.

I find the coverage very good where I live and always have signal in York so I'm happy.

I guess the trick is finding a network that works best for you in your area not what works best for everyone else in different areas.

When I was using a mobile 3G connection with work through a 3G router it was with Vodafone due to the councils current mobile contracts with them and the connection was useless for about 90% of the time where ever I was. We ditched it in favor for T-Mobile in the end.
