While I've got the rear beam off.....

Featured Replies

Had a bit of an accident a few days ago and managed to slide into a kerb and bend the rear beam.

Getting one fitted from a scrappy, but wondering if there is anything worth doing while I've got it off the car? I'm planning on changing the mounting bushes on the scrap beam with the fabia vrs ones (Got them on the current beam), and hammeriting it.

The car has a RARB, new brake pipes and a new caliper, so these will obviously be going back on.

The replacement beam came from a Golf GTI iirc.

Whooops, that must have been a reasonable impact with the kerb. Is the rear beam obviously bent?

Apart from the Fabia vRS bushes and a good clean up I can't see there is much more you can do.

i bent mine too nudging a wall :/ all changed for a polybushed one now, fitted a ARB in the process and gave it all a coat of paint

With that much force, could you have damaged the hub/wheel bearing/etc ?

stub axels are straight still and bearing and abs rings are safe. its my understanding that the beam are the chocolate part of the set up

Its getting new stubs (well, 1 at least) and bearings anyway, as the replacement beam didn't come with them.

The most annoying part is my alloy took the impact, and although it is straight, the newish antracite powdercoat didn't like it!

Finally got the car back today, after having 2 beams in a week.

The first one we fitted was bent, but you couldn't tell until the wheels were back on,. and the car would pull to right all the time. Changed it again, and it's all better.

Can't believe how nice the octy is compared to the knackered old escort I've been driving around in the last 2 weeks, and how fast it is

Did you buy a brand new beam or go for scrapped beams both times???

Got a scrapped one both times. Dread to think how much a new one is

Out of curiosity I looked it up on Etka (old copy with some prices) :-

1J0 500 051K (rear axle beam with stabilizer) £608.88 (incl' vat @18%)

Scarey :(

Whoa! Didn't expect them to be that much!

I thought the £100 I paid for mine was expensive, but obviously a bargain.

When it was fitted, the bushes were the normal ones, but looked in pretty good nick, so didn't bother changing them. Car seems a lot smoother now, and doesn't make as much noise on rough roads as the old beam did with the fabia vrs bushes in it.

Yeah lol, I had a bit of a shock, checked it twice. Think you can safely say "RESULT"
