wheel nuts

Featured Replies

Does anyone know the thread type and diameter of the standard wheel nut/bolts used on the 1.8 TSi? I want to see if I can get a length of threaded steel studding that fits correctly into the holes in the hub.

If this is useful to anyone else, I got a pair of 14 mm x 1.5 wheel bolts from my local outlet, Cliffords of Hove, and made studs by cutting off the heads then making a slot in the cut end, suitable for a screwdriver blade (this was 'belt and braces' as I found you don't really need a screwdriver). The cut end was cleaned up to be free of any burs.

When now replacing a wheel, I put these two studs into two of the holes (NOT next to each other) in the hub, so the slotted ends stick out about 1.5 inches. This makes it very easy to relocate the wheel because all the other holes are automatically lined up, and the wheel is supported on the studs (the circular ridge moulded on the hub does not retain the wheel very well with no bolts in.)

Three of the "real" wheel bolts are then fitted finger tight into the remaining holes, then the "fake" studs are removed, the last two bolts put in their holes, and all is tightened as usual. This is a great help for oldies like me who don't find it easy to hump even alloy wheels around and hold them in place.

The slotted studs are kept in the spare wheel basket, along with the jack etc.

Cutting the heads off these high tensile bolts did take a few minutes, and you might instead be able to get headless studding locally. Also, on the internet, you can get headless alloy wheel bolts from e.g. http://www.priracing.com/section.php/92/1/studs-universal/d8ec6441a5755d83443b1314cc6c56da which would do the same trick without alteration.

Nice tip/trick well done

I hope you didn't pay more than £7.99 for the wheel nuts?

These are readily available to serve the very same purpose...

Cost me about £7 for 2 - I think I could get away with one but 2 is better, at that price!

I agree that the studs shown above would also be just right - they should supply them with new cars!

They come as standerd in Audi tool kits, and they must be the same size !

So they ought to be available at VAG dealers? Verry Interesting (but how expensive???)
