Would you trust an eBay sellers recon turbo?

Featured Replies

Hi!

I had my forge seat sport style IC fitted to my Ibiza fr tdi yesterday and it was pressure and smoke tested afterwards and no boost leak present anymore. However every time I boot it it sounds exactly like a boost leak a loud high pitch whistle/siren noise which leads me to worry my turbo ain't so healthy now.

Anyway browsing eBay I found a company selling re conditioned pd150 garret turbos done with genuine parts for £390, so would you trust them? They have good feedback and sell quite a few other turbos but they arent one of the big company's...how much do the big guys charge for a non hybrid pd150 turbo roughly?

Here's the link to it...http://bit.ly/t6nZLv

Many thanks

Josh

Look at his feedback, he sells clothing mostly, so he is a reseller. I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole if I were you.

When someone on ebay says "not the usual chinese crap" what they really mean is "this is the usual chinese crap only I'm charging a bit more for it". There is a reason why rebuilding turbo's is expensive, it's not the parts, it's the tooling for dynamically balancing the turbine assembly at 100k RPM+. Buy cheap and you'll buy twice, go to an ENGINEERING firm and pay to get a proper unit with a proper guarantee.

What worries me is the seven days bit.

It's got to be posted and arrive, be fitted and tested in that time!

Not much of a warranty

IF THIS OPERATION IS NOT CARRIED OUT AND THE NEW UNIT IS DAMAGED

DUE TO INCORRECT FITMENT THE WARRANTY IS NIL & VOID + THE REFUND POLICY IS NOT

APPLICABLE. THE UNIT MUST ALSO BE INSPECTED FIRST BEFORE A

REPLACEMENT IS ISSUED. ANY ISSUES MUST BE BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION

WITHIN 7 DAYS OF PURCHASE - MANY THANKS

I paid £540 + my knackered PD130 for a brand new PD150.

CR Turbos as well, although they're apparently a bit hit and miss quality wise (I haven't used them myself, mine is a Turbo Dynamics unit which seems fine but tbh I wouldn't know the difference between good and bad, I just know it's not broken right now)

I paid £360 for a refurb on my PD100

I wouldn't buy anything reconditioned from a seller I didn't know or had no reputation to speak of. I once bought a recon gearbox for my polo gti, £400 or something and when it arrived it was just an old box that had been sprayed silver. Still whined like a bitch. Once burnt, twice shy

High pitched screech at high boost will be loose intercooler joint somewhere even though it got tested

Maybe intercooler has a leak in it
