Anyone using Virgin Media Tivo?

Featured Replies

Now that my super cheap deal with Sky has ended, I'm looking back to Virgin for TV.

My parents still have the original V+ box and it's appalling. It's so slow to respond and it often crashes. I find myself getting frustrated with it after about 30 seconds.

Their Tivo seems to get very good reviews, however I prefer to know what actual users opinions are like.

Would you recommend it?

I was on the gadget show a couple of weeks back and scored very highly indeed. Still slower than the Sky box but i am sure that F/W updates will sort this over the next few months.

You can search for things like your favourite actor and then record anything that they are in for example....In that respect it beat the Sky box for its versatility...

I am considering it if they can guarantee that the broadband would be fit for purpose (i managed to cancel 6 months in and get all my money back as the broadband was appalling) but then again i couldn't be doing with the traffic management and shaping that goes on.

I'm currently using them for broadband and don't plan on changing that. Max I can get from ADSL at the minute is about 4mb, where as VM do 100mbps here :)

Yeah i am on 5MB on ADSL2 and can get 500kbps on any download (eg microsoft website download) vs 10MB connection on Virgin and 6kbps download on anything. They eventually admitted that the fibre cab was over subscribed.

We have BT Infinity on our estate but again the traffic management is horrendous...The mother in law has it and torrents sit at 2kbps. I just wish wholesale would get on and offer it to decent ISPs like Be/O2 B)

They have traffic shaping, but it's easy to get around. I'm on 30mb and it maxes out downloading from newsgroups :)

I have no problems with their broadband service

Be interested to know how you get round it?!

Encrypted newsgroups going over standard SSL ports. :)

I wouldnt touch Virgin again solely on their HD quality.....its nowhere near the quality of the SKY HD

regardless of box storage capabilities

Now their broadband on the other hand is just

I've got the 1Tb Tivo box and think it's great. Only £3 a month more. Plenty of storage and I think the HD is great (granted I've no experience on sky HD so can't offer a comparison). I rarely watch tv live, so to be able to record and watch things when I want was a good thing.

I have the 500Meg TiVo box and I also think it's EXCELLENT.

well worth going for.

With regard for HD quality, it now OUTSHINES Sky emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

They have an 'introduce a friend' scheme so if you're seriously interested get in touch with me and there is £50 each in it for us. :p

Well I signed up for it earlier on and cancelled Sky.

After looking at some more reviews, the backwards EPG and the recommend features sold it to me.

Just gotta wait until Jan 14th for installation now :(

Ahh bugger. I was already with them for broadband so I doubt they'd do the deal anyway.

You won't regret it.

I had my 500gb Tivo installed at the beginning of December, so far i've been really pleased with it. I will just highlight one potential lowlight though, it's could be quite an annoying issue too... If you are a regular user of the BBC's red button, you won't be once you get your Tivo! The red button currently just loads up a BBC iPlayer app, you currently cannot acces the interactive features of the beebs red button service. Apparently they will be releasing an app in a firmware update to enable the feature, but for now, your out of luck. It's one reason i waited until the F1 season was over before i switched to the Tivo, as the F1 forum and practice sessions were the only things i usually use the red button for....

I got tivo this month and its brilliant. Much better than sky with the added bonus of perfect signal no matter the weather.

Had this in for over a week now and can't fault it

Just as slick as Sky+ Menu took a bit of getting used to, but integrated apps like YouTube are great.

Well worth ditching Sky and saving a bunch of cash emoticon-0148-yes.gif

What's an encrypted newsgroup?

I use newsgroups through SSL and it still traffic shapes, every day 5 till 12 its capped. Full speed at all other times though.

Add the fact that Virgin Media are now doubling customer broadband speeds makes this EXCELLENT value for money.

Makes no difference. Still capped. :'( Ah well mostly just leave my server overnight anyway. :)
