Turn the key, the car starts, tries to rev and dies

Featured Replies

Hi guys, a problem that has developed a few weeks ago (I thought it would sort itself out) is as follows:

I turn the key to start (from cold or after recently driving). The engine starts up at revs up to 10 - 12 as usual but then the revs drop and it dies. I have got around this problem by gently pressing the gas and letting it down easy back to idle. This problem seems to happen in the cold and mild weather, not consistently. Any ideas what this could be? (I have a feeling something needs a clean out... carb?) The car has had new oil and air filter in Sept.

While I got you though, I have a weird noise coming from the engine when I start up from cold, the noise can be best described by plastic rubbing intermittently on something (like scraping polystyrene foam on a wall, tshk tshk tshk tshk LOL). The noise is periodic it sounds like a belt behaving badly... but then why does the noise go after the engine warms up? What else could it be?

Thanks for any help in advance and I hope you all have a great Xmas and New Year!

When the oil was done did you get the spark plugs changed?

Check all vacuum hoses for leaks, perishing. Throttle body may need a good clean and adaption. Sounds like it's running to rich or lean.

Didn't do spark plugs,

Think I should change them first before I do hoses and throttle body?

Personally I would.

My fiancee's polo had this issue recently and we just serviced it as it hasnt been done in 15k and its been perfect since.

We changed plugs, oil, cleaned air filter (k&n), polen filter, oilfilter and fuel filter. (i think that was it)
