Octavia 6 CD Stack Stuck

Featured Replies

Hi all!

In a bit of a pickle at the moment, I brought some new CD's from HMV and went to stick them in the octy (doesn't like playing copies) so after putting them in the CD player wouldn't load. This brought up the CHK MAGAZINE code on the head unit.. This has happened before a few times so just turned the CD player on and off a few times usually does it. Still no joy.

So I went to the back of the car and tried to eject the stack, pressed the button but nothing happened. I turned the ignition off and waited a while to restart and tried to eject the stack again and still nothing.

The CD stack seems as if it isn't secured properly in the holding.. sort of wobbling in the space.

Does anyone know how I can reset this in the housing properly or at least get the CD stack out on the holder.

It's been really dark and I assume all of the boot trim needs to come out so I have come here first rather than working blind in the boot

Much Appreciated.

Lew

I can't help much with that, but can say you can release it with 3 nuts (think they're 8 or 10mm) and if the worst comes to the worst, you can prise it open and remove all the CDs. Destroys the changer, but to be honest, I think it's ****. Mine never worked anyway. CD changers are a bloody rubbish design.

You could try pulling the fuse and see what happens when you power up again?

I would check you don't have a water from the rear washer jet pipe in the boot. The loom & pipe are bundled together under the CD changer - along with a joint in the pipework. The joint can split and then soak the CD changer plugs.

I believe that if you remove the changer from the car you can manually eject the cartridge.

fwiw: just remake the joint - don't be tempted to secure it anymore - it is better to have a joint you can easily access pop apart rather than one hidden under the tailgate trim, etc.

mine did exactly the same a few years ago had to strip the changer down to get the cd cassette out then had had a reason to go and buy a pioneer head unit so i can play cd's again ( still havent got a 12v arial booster yet :giggle: )

Mine attempted to put a disc back into a slot already containing a disc. Unfortunately it seemed to bend the mechanism in the process, I managed to take it apart and remove the cassette but it wouldn't pick the disc up again after that. So I got a new head unit with a USB connection and put the music from the CDs onto a usb drive.

The CD unit is not on a rigid mounting so seems a bit floppy. From memory it is held by a tongue on one end and a bolt in a slot on the other.

I had the same Bosch CD unit on a previous car and I too had sticking CDs as you describe. I removed the unit from the car and then took out the case screws to get inside. Make a note of how of goes together again as screw lengths are not all the same. The Octavia unit may be a later unit but it looks and works the same as one I fixed and should be the similar.

After releasing the CD I cleaned out all the dust inside and could see that the stickiness was due to the grease having been wiped off the moving surfaces. I transferred excess white grease from other parts of the mechanism to the dry moving parts, tested it and put it back. No more problem during the time I had the car.

Some other faults can be cleared by removing the power plug for a a minute or two. I have never had two CDs in one slot during the 8 years or more I have had cars with this unit.

Suggest you try the removing power trick first as it is easy to do and the logic can sometimes get screwed up.

Many thanks, will give this a go if I get a minute today.

It is most definitely not the rear washer pipe, I know this because the washer joint is broken at the washer bottle haha.

Rather than pulling the fuse unplug the changer itself may give a better result and no risk of radio code issues

Is there a fuse box location diagram for the octy?, I've had a search but can't find anything. If I press CD on the head unit nothing comes up not even CHK MAGAZINE, SURFACE, ERR etc.. it's like it doesn't actually even recognise that there is a CD Player.

I didn't get a chance to look over Christmas, gonna wedge something down the side whilst pressing eject.. looks like that might work according to other VW/Audi sites

We shall see!

Cabin fuses are on the end of the dashboard behind a cover (you can only pull it off with drivers door open). Haynes manual has the diagram of which fuse is which. I think the owners manual does too but it's reversed for LHD cars.

It's a ten minute job to unscrew the changer from the mount (four torx bit screws), pull back the boot trim and unplug it from the stereo loom multiplug, so I would probably try the unplug/re-plug first. You'll have to take the unit out anyway if you want to try and get the cartridge out by hand.

Am I being a pure retard?! I literally cannot see/feel any fixings!

There should be a felt covered box surrounding the changer, this is held to the changer by 4 very small torx head screws 2 at either side as you look at it face on, once you've removed these (the ones nearest the suspension turret are hard to get to, use a small torx key) then the felt cover will come off and the changer will also now be loose on the mount, then just slide the changer up and off the mount.

This is the mounting chassis for the changer (in my estate)

Good pic of the screws there

Once you loosen those the changer will slide off the mount. If you remove the screws completely then the felt cover can be taken off (the felt cover is off already in that pic)

Thanks for that last reply - the picture was really helpful - I'm about to try and sort my broken cd changer out so I'll try unplugging the lead and refitting it first.
