Exhaust Smoke

Featured Replies

Our Fabia VRS MY56 Smokes like aa chimney as we accelerate, yet my Octavia MY58 seems a lot cleaner less smoke. I just thought this was a bit odd is this normal.

Fabia vRS = No DPF in the exhaust to remove / reduce soot emissions. The Octy vRS diesel has always had a DPF so will smoke a lot less, if at all.

My Previous car smoked like a chimney, but my current superb with almost the same engine is practically smokeless.

Try a new OEM air filter and check for boost leaks, they shouldn't smoke much at all on standard mapping.

New Air filter, and if it's done greater than 80k and still on the original MAF that can be worth a look at too.

As above new air filter. Also cold weather makes it smokier than usual as it takes longer to warm up properly. Does it smoke much after a long journey?

Forgot to mention it also has a PD160 fitted.

Soot1e, I cannot answer that one, Never took any notice if smokes after a long journey, I seem to notice more if its dark it shows more in the headlights of the following car.

cheezemonkhai, 64000 miles and it has got a K+N filter in, (my Son says).

MoggyTech, as above miles and filter,

Go and put an OEM paper filter in it and clean the MAF.

The K&N might need cleaning and if it has been cleaned and over oiled, that oil can coat the MAF sensor and cause it to read inaccurately.

That poor MAF reading can cause excessive smoke.

Basically to clean the MAF you'll need some suitable electrical contact cleaner or IPA. If that doesn't work you might need to replace it, but if you do, then make sure you get an exchange unit as you'll get >£20 back when you give the old one back.

What colour is the smoke??

Black = fuel

White = water

Blue = oil

Black = fuel, If it had been any other I would have known the answer.

I know a guy who is a master technician at VW, He said to me that if you don't let the turbo calm down before shutting off the engine like for 30-40 seconds, when you switch the engine off it is still going at 60,000 rpm but there is no oil pressure as you have turned it off so it spins dry and wears the brass bearing between the turbo fans causing the gap to increase. This lets oil pass leading to the engine burning that resulting in the the black smoke.

Always let the turbo relax for a minute.

Had a problem with mine after it sat for approx a year -smoked when pushed - but now after a few miles on road ,no smoke . Put it down to sitting around for a year doing nothing . All smoke MOT tests to going off road were low - as was the one after going back on road -so nothing suspect .

As said, a standard vRS shouldn't smoke like a chimney. A little bit of smoke on full whack, yes, but not plumes.

Black smoke is unburned fuel, so something isn't right.

Could be that a sensor is duff so it's injecting too much fuel in the first place, or a boost leak meaning you haven't got enough air in the cylinders to burn the "normal" amount of fuel.

OR another possibility is that at some point in its life, it's been remapped, and that's causing excessive amount of diesel to be injected.

I know when one of my boost pipes was opening up under load, it would billow out plumes of smoke. Now that's sorted, it's clean as a whistle, even with a remap.

The old saying "no smoke no poke" is utter tosh. There's no need for a TDI to chuck out clouds of soot, even when it's remapped. It's just wasting fuel and creating super high EGTs.
