Damaged door mirror indicator lens

Featured Replies

An idiot in a Subaru Impreza (ha!) didn't pull over on a narrow lane just now and has taken a chip out of the indicator lens on the RHS door mirror. The electrics all work and the rest of the mirror, including paint, is unscathed. Is the clear lens available as a spare part, and how hard is it to fit?

I always knew putting indicators in door mirrors was a stupid idea :(

I seem to remember reading on here that it is available seperately and fairly cheaply and is easy to replace.

Bl**dy scoot boy racers.

You buy the light unit in one piece (complete with a new lamp). Take out the mirror glass and undo two small torx screws to drop the light unit. They're about 20 quid from

You don't list your car in your profile so not sure if yours is pre-facelift or facelift.

If pre-FL then there are plenty on eBay, here is one delivered for less than £20...

As above replacement is easy, fold the mirror glass all the way down so that you can get your fingers behind to the top edge and gently prize the glass away from the mirror. Once it's off you will see two Torx screws and an electrical connector, pop these off and the lens comes off - simple.

You complain that indicators in wing mirrors are a bad idea but that cracked plastic lens might have just saved you having to replace the colour coded cap and have it painted - all of which would set you back a lot more than £20.

Thanks all. I will see if the dealer has one in stock.

OK, it's a post-facelift model. Mirror glass popped off easily enough but I can't see how the actual indicator unit comes out as the motor is in the way. It seems that the black base of the mirror will need to come out first. Any clues?

Remove mirror cover

pop mirror out and disconnect

undo the very small torx screws

Light then comes of

I found it easier to remove mirror which is clipped on and a small cable to unclip

Right, done it, with much cursing and a few broken clips on the coloured plastic cover (these don't actually do anything when all the screws are back in, but it's annoying). Basically the coloured cover has to be lifted free after undoing two screws and prising it free. This then gives enough room for the indicator unit to be unscrewed and lifted out. Unfortunately one of the tags which attaches the indicator unit to the cover is inaccessible and the two top clips which attach the cover to the metal body are so flimsy that they don't like bending more than once, especially in cold weather, so they break too.

Next time I'd do it in warm weather, or pay the dealer. Having said that, the guy in the dealer told me that he often breaks the glass when he does it, so they have no more luck than us.

It sounds as if the pre-facelift model was a LOT easier.

It's really not hard. You just need to be gentle I done both of mine and took around 10mins and im no mechanic. I clipped the mirror of bit by bit and it came of fine same with mirror cover

Apologies for the thread revival but for those searching this forum to replace the indicator lens in the door mirror on a fl Octavia may well find this thread which helped me to replace mine.

I would agree with Donovan, its not a hard job however I can't stress enough how gentle you need to be to remove the mirror. I was as gentle as could be and still managed to crack the mirror. I have put the old mirror back in as its hardly noticeable but will be replacing it in the next few weeks as I am a bit of a perfectionist.

Good luck!

Hi, I wonder if someone can advise... I need to to replace my driver side led door indicator. Being a complete novice I was very please with myself having removed the unit and ordering a replacement part from euro car parts. I took it home and was disappointed to see the wiring connector was completely different. I even used my reg number to get the right part but it was still the wrong one. The connector in the old part had wiring that seemed to have been stick in place with silicone but the new part had a socket that you plugged the main wiring into. Euro car parts said the one I bought was the only part they did so I would have to go to a main dealer which to me sounds like its going to be a lot more costly compared to euro car parts price of £14.10. Can anyone suggest where I can get the part without going to a main dealer? I have an '05 Octavia Ambiente. The euro car part number I got was 477440601. My MOT is due in a couple of weeks so I don't have much time to sort! Thanks for any help.

Sounds to me as though maybe at some point the cars lost a mirror and the wiring has been botched when replaced; either that or the part sent has a revised wiring harness; VAG to revise parts throughout a vehicles lifecycle.

might actually be worth taking the car to a VAG specialist, should be able to put it right and wouldnt cost you a fortune.

These parts are either 20 quid or 40 quid from the dealer depending on whether you have puddle lights or not. Part number is 1z0 949 102 c or d (d with puddle lights).

Puddle lights are usually fitted to Elegance and above models, not sure about Ambiente. It may be the connector is different for the two, although yours sounds like its been tampered with if there is silicon involved as pipsyp suggests. Can you take some pictures?

Hi. I don't think its been tampered with as I have had the car since nearly new and it was immaculate when I got with full skoda history...perhaps my use of the word silicone was wrong. I've attached a pic of the wiring used. The white hard plastic bit connected to the wiring coming through the door and the other side with the 2 wires was connected to the led unit. It was this end that seemed to be attaxhed with what I called silicone but it seemed to be factory fitted

I reckon a plug is missing off the end that you thought was siliconed (or has been added in newer models and parts).  When I replaced mine recently, it looked different and had a plug on the end.

I recall when I was looking at parts for mine you could also buy a small loom (cheaply) for this bit as there was a problem with older ones. I didn't need it personally but it had a CC/DD prefix on a 1z0949101 part number, dependent on whether you had the puddle light or not.

See here for example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-SKODA-OCTAVIA-MK2-1Z-WING-MIRROR-INDICATOR-ADAPTOR-WIRING-1Z0949101CC-/380704019133?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item58a3ba52bd

Thanks for that. I think it must have been added in later models. OK, I know what I need now.

Many thanks
