Hit a pothole, front left clunking...

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

On my way home from work yesterday I hit a drain that had sunk probably about 5/6 inches, massive thud but the car still handles normally.

The only thing is, the front left was the wheel that hit it and since then, going over bumps it makes a clunking sound. Turning right at a roundabout it makes a similar noise, although more squeaky.

What's broken? Not that knowledgeable on cars but I hear bushes can go because of this.

Thanks,

Matt

Could be spring-comes apart over bumps, the 2 parts grate against each turning.

I had similar thing few years ago. Go and take a photo of the pothole with something in the photo to show scale. Then get a report for repairs and claim it all back from the council. I hit a pothole and got 2 punctures and 2 bent rims. Claimed for the lot from the council for original oem wheels from dealer. Ended up getting full set of aftermarket wheels and 4 new tyres as dealer was so expensive.

Safety check needed on suspension. Wishbone and balljoint, and drop link.

The problem seems to have disappeared overnight. Driving around today, plenty of exactly the same kind of driving as last night and no clunky or squeaking no matter what I try to do to provoke it. I've definitely not noticed any loss of tracking or any other kind of change in steering.

We're going to jack it up on Tuesday and give it a look over regardless but I'm less scared now.

Jacked it up this morning and had a good look around, couldn't see any fluid, the spring looks fine, the wheel doesn't wobble, my dad checked a few other things that I can't remember. Fingers crossed I got away with it.

Also did tyres as they were all at 20psi, handling feels much better now at the correct pressures.
