Suspension woes

Featured Replies

Firstly Merry Xmas to all Skoda owners

OK i placed a post a number of months ago ref the ride height of my '99 Octavia estate

I have come to the conclusion it is either the springs or shock absorbers on the front, I have come to this conclusion because she is very wallowy and on uneven roads she has a tendency to scrape the front bumper

She is approaching her 200,000 birthday so i will treat her

1. As a novice mechanic is this a job i should attempt myself

2 Do i need spring compressors

3 Shall i get a haynes manual or is there a good description on the net somewhere

Many thanks

1. It's not difficult.

2. Most definitely, yes. The draper ones (pair) are good for less than £20.

3. Pass. But a Haynes is useful if nothing else.

My suspension on my vRS Estate was absolutely dead at 50,000 miles, but it would seem the last 20,000 (at least) had been spent towing a caravan. Springs were OK though, as just chucking the shox did the trick. They were in a really bad way. Especially one of the rears.

You'll need top mounts for both sets (if doing front and rear) most likely (especially fronts), and bump stops for both sets too (especially rear bump stops).

With that mileage I wouldn't just be replacing the fronts myself. Rears are quite a bit cheaper than the fronts though.

No more bottoming out with mine, and much more stable. Still a little bit uncertain on the back end though, but that's the nature of the beast.
