Spare Wheel - Best / Cheapest option?

My new Fabia Estate had no spare wheel - just one of the useless tyre repair kits.

Which is the best/cheapest option to buy a spare wheel - complete steel wheel with tyre from the dealer or wheel from dealer and buy own tyre?

Or get a steel wheel from another source - internet, etc?

Best option would have to have ordered it when you ordered the car.

Best option now is a scrap yard as you will not only need a wheel and tyre but also the tool kit.

I think you can maybe get from the dealer as a bundle....

16" with brand spanking conti tire unsure of size but ill guess 205/45/16

Will fit a new fabia as stud fitment is the same

I got a spare wheel tool kit from Allams £29.00 inc tool box that goes in the spare wheel Plus screw to hold wheel. Jack/ Brace and strap. I think spare wheel is about £99 inc tyre

The inflation kit may or may not be useless; you can't tell until you try it on the tyre with the particular puncture in question. Bear in mind the car also has 3 years roadside though.

Obviously it depends on many factors but personally I'm running at one puncture in 200k miles, so a risk I'm reasonably relaxed about.

I have just swapped my Gigaros for winter tyres/alloys and all 4 were fused solid on to the hubs.

It would have been impossible to change a wheel at the roadside if I had a flat.

I have a surplus spacesaver 5x100 that will go on a fab.

It was a slightly used Golf spare that I bought for SWMBO's Audi A2.

lucky old you. On 2 cars in the last 12 months and about 35k combined i have spent close on £600 in punctures. 2 of which were sidewalls (bleeding broken drains and kerbs) which would render a repair kit useless and a breakdown call required. For the £55 it cost me to have a spare, it was worth every penny.

Yes, it's easier to fix a simple puncture ie nail in tread. However, a repair kit will not fix, sidewall damage (bulges, slashed), large holes, blowouts, rim leaks, rim/wheel damage, etc.

I have a steel spare on my MK1 .I also carry an inflation kit an a large hammer .Kit is for minor punctures and slow punctures ,but be aware , any temporary repair needs to be fixed properly .

Hammer is to get alloys off as once on ,even with grease , they can be difficult/impossible without a bang or two with a large instrument . Another necesity with alloys is a torque wrench - you can't get any guarantee of correct torque otherwise on alloy /steel wheels . Big change from days of yore ,when standing on wheelbrace was sufficient .

If you use the puncture repair kit then no matter what the damage is to the tyre, even a small screw in the tread, you will be unable to have it repaired due to all the crap that comes from the repair kit. i opted for spare tyre as repairs at garage is cheaper than a new tyre :)
