Rain water runs right into boot

Featured Replies

Has anyone managed to stop the rainwater run into the boot when the tailgate is opened?

I'm sure this the cause of wet boot floors apart from leaking washer bottles.

Yes, don't polish the boot lid.

Water only runs into my boot when the water collects in large droplets on the boot lid, spoiler and glass.

The sheer volume of rain water that makes for the drainage channels when you open the boot overwhelms them and it runs/spills over into the boot.

Another solution is to open the boot more slowly; this gives the water a chance to drain off without flooding into the boot.

When the car is dirty and the water is unable to bobble on the paint and glass I don't notice the problem.

Cheers silver. I'll give it a go.

If it's a hatch, there was a thread in here about 5 years ago with a mod to fix this.

Apparently a member bought a short strip of silicone rubber hose and cut it so it could be pushed into the gap between the bottom of the rear screen and the tailgate. Apparently that stopped it. Never tried it myself, and I don't know how successful it is in the long term.

The thread may still be around if you do a search, although some of them from way back then did seem to disappear for a while.

Yes. I have that on my hatch, the water streams off the glass and down into the boot, not into the drainage channels at the side of the opening. This is because the Octavia has glass that is curved towards the outside and that is where the water is going to run when the boot is opened and gravity takes hold. Try getting a tube of clear silicone sealant and put a small bead of it around the sides of the tailgate glass to provide a dam and channel the water down to the front of the tailgate where it will run into the drainage channel.

Ian.

I just lift the hatch slowly at first, until the worst drains off, then lift as normal, works fine for me

+1, there really is no need to be applying silicone to the glass/boot :giggle:

If the car is parked nice and level, that is. On a slight camber it's not quite so clear cut as the water tends to run to the side and then around the lip of the glass and into your boot! Grrrr... (our road has a camber!)

Also, in very heavy rain when fishing wet weather gear out of the boot for the family, the rain collects in the number plate recess and when you close the boot it goes all over the front of your trousers and makes you look as is you've p1ssed yourself in a severe manner :( (been there and done that too - fortunately in a matter of minutes the rest of me was equally wet)

my drive has around 20 - 30 degree of slope. I park at an angle. Rain water ALWAYS runs in when I open the boot when I park on the drive but not at work etc on a flat. might have a closer look and monitor the situation...

It's a water feature.

Shortly after I bought my car I applied rain-x to the rear screen. Massive no no. The water beads lovely but collects a lot of water. When you open the boot it's like the Hoover dam has just collapsed . Never again!!

Should've bought an estate... ;)

Its a feature, same on the Mk 1.

It might be worth trying to find some U-Section rubber / plastic trim that will fit over the edges of the tailgate glass. Should then channel the water towards the front edge of the glass rather than it running off the sides.

I think one of the recent Focus models (2005-2010 or whatever years they are) has this - Part might fit the Octavia?

Ha that made me chuckle.

Iv just bought some of that rain x stuff, think ill just be using it for the front then ey but iv never personally had a problem with rain water running into the boot, just how fast do you open it? :giggle:

+1 thats what I have been doing too better polished it is too for that method helps it roll off fast longs as you dont fire it open too fast

Rain water runs right into boot

Yes it does.

Normally right into the shopping bags. Never solved it.

On my break did does not happen, I do have the chrome piece at the end

where the glass meets the metal part of the boot lid is a rain chanel .......all I did on mine to tryn it was to stick a bit of blutack at the ends...this proved to help a bit so I replaced it with a dab of silicone sealer....never did stop it completley on the mk 1 or mk 2 but if you lift up the boot a little and let the water drain off before fully opening its fine .....as has already been said only 100% way to stop it is to buy the estate version

update, was at supermarket this afternoon and noticed that rain water poured in both sides even though I opened the boot as slowly as possible. A cure would be nice lol
