YETI Purchase Question(s)

Featured Replies

Hello,

We're seriously considering saying goodbye to the Superb  (our third Skoda) and have been looking at a new YETI. The (Elegance 1.2 petrol auto) test drive went reasonably satisfactorily but one or two questions have arisen and I hope someone can help us to arrive at our decision.

We're both retired and now have a motorhome - hence saying goodbye to the Superb and SHWLTO's Yaris.

Questions:

1. Our mileage will be in the order of 10 to 12k - Petrol or Diesel? (I'd prefer diesel but thinking here about potential DPF 'issues').

2. DSG. Have the issues been resolved? We've read stories about the gearbox suddenly overheating and shutting down.

3. Whilst travelling in the rear seat, there seemed to be quite a lot of 'banging' noise from, I thought, the suspension (I'm not a mechanic!) Is this to be expected? Also when driving, I was conscious of noise from traffic overtaking us at various speeds up to motorway max.

Finally, is it true that a price increase is imminent?

Any thoughts will be gratefully received.

Happy New Year to all.

1. I'd go petrol for cheaper purchase price in the first place and not seriously worse economy. Sure, a diesel will be cheaper long term, but in the meantime (4 or 5 years probably) you get a car that warms up faster, is lighter and also whisper quiet.

2. As far as I know, they seem fine. Not heard of any real Yeti problems with the DSG.

3. Should be no noise at all.

I am not that biased, we tried a 1.2 DSG and own one, but also have another 1.2 DSG (it's great!) on order and a diesel 4x4 too.

Our 1.2 Tsi DSG has averaged 41.6mpg from day one and is not even run in yet. 5,500 miles in 14 months.

Remember you are coming from a Superb and that is quieter than the Yeti.

No issues with the DSG that I'm aware of. I'm on my second oner now, however both have been the 6 speed wet clutch ones, rather than the 7 speed dry clutch one in the 1.2TSI, which I believe is as economical as the manual version.

There is more suspension noise than the Roomster I drive the other day, but the latest Yeti are much better than the original ones. Also, personally, I find the 16" wheels with the larger profile tyres are more comfortable than the 17" wheels with rubber bands fro tyres that I have to put up with in the summer.

Hi and welcome to the monster forum.

If your after DSG then your options are limited to the 1.2 petrol with a 7 speed box or a 140 TDI 4x4 with 6 speeds; the latter is much more expensive. Have driven the 1.2 DSG and it is a good package and I've not come across any issues regards reliability of the DSG fitted to the Yeti.

The banging you refer to could be down to the wheels and tyres fitted to your test vehicle. Some (such as myself) find the 17" alloys and 225/50 profile tyres provide a harsher ride than can be found on lower spec vehicles with 16" alloys and 215/60 tyres. Fortunately managed to get Skoda (manufacturer) to build my second Yeti with the 16" rims and the ride is much smoother than with the SE I had before.

Regard other traffic noise; cannot give an answer to that ,as I nor my passengers have not noticed or commented on such an issue, including a 980 mile trip across Europe in a day.

Prices usually go up at the beginning of the year, so expect this possibly next week.

Hope of help,

TP

I forgot to add in my post above that if it has to be DSG and you don't need 4x4 then the 1.2 Tsi DSG is the obvious choice.

The diesel DSG only comes in 4x4 and is a lot heavier than the 1.2 petrol DSG.

So the fuel economy is pretty much the same in both (just the petrol is much cheaper - £3000-£4000) and the 6 speed DSG in the Diesel has wet chutches that seem to add drag. The diesel DSG has noticably worse fuel economy than the manual version while in the petrol there is no economy penalty in order to go DSG. (as I just saw RH mentioned)

Also when driving, I was conscious of noise from traffic overtaking us at various speeds up to motorway max.

Never experienced THAT problem :giggle:

I think everyone has covered the main points already but just to add my tuppence worth I recently moved from the 2.0 diesel octy to a 1.2 tsi yeti and have been more than happy with the small engine. I can't comment on the DSG though as I have manual but unless you do more miles then there's no reason to look beyond the tsi in my view.

I think you'll find the 1,2 ideal. Bellies it's size. As to noise compare it to your wife's Yaris. I'm sure it will be well quieter than that but as you'd expect wont be as whisper quiet as the Superb (just like your Superb won't be as quiet as a Rolls Royce Phantom!). You pays your money and makes your choice.

I don't think you'll need the 4x4 equipment of the 2,0 TDI DSG. It weighs more and the car is considerably more expensive than a 1,2 DSG. So unless you need 4x4 stick to the 1,2.

Thanks to all who replied so quickly. It looks like we'll be going for one in the near future now that our concerns seem to have been assuaged.

Now to find the best deal  We were offered a 6% discount but I've seen them at 10 on the web - suppose it depends on what we are offered for the Superb 91k and Yaris 9k.

Again, many thanks and a Happy and Uneventful New Year to all.

There are a few dealers who sponsor the site. Worth giving them a try.

As said, if you are going new there may be a price increase next week for 2012... last year it was 2% on the pre-VAT prices.

Don't expect much for a leaking Superb, I was offered IIRC either £2,800 or £3,200 18 months ago by a main dealer for my 2004 Superb comfort with the same mileage - mine was bone dry and in VGC, they do not hold their money very well, less so if they are damp.

I had an e-mail last week stating they were indeed going up by 2% from the beginning of the year.
