Ive been trying to do some research into different DA's and the different polishes/glazes/waxes etc etc to buy and it seems that some machines can polish harder than others and some polishes cut more than others and the pads have different uses and it depends on what car you have to depend on which brand and type of polish to buy, so its left me a bit baffled!! (well, rather a lot baffled)

What im looking to do is a bit of correction on my paint, remove a few slight swirls and few light scratch marks on my race blue fabia vrs.

Really im looking to find out which machines you use and which are the popular correction polishes, glazes, waxes and pads you use on your skodas and any good deals you know of at the moment.

If you have any other advice on the poll i.e you use a mixture of different brands, could you please state in your post please.

Thanks for your time, hopefully this will be of use to others in the same situation

You need a variety of pads and a variety of polishes. Depends on the scratches, light swirls may be removed with a final finish pad and a final finish polish. Heavier scratches might need a more aggressive pad and compound. Plus the pads don't last that long either so might need a few.

I bought a DAS 6 Menzerna kit which had 3 different pads and 2 different polishes. I then bought a small backing plate and spot pads(for small areas). All the different products(sonus/menzerna etc) all do similar things anyway.

I have a Meguiars V220 v2

Chem Guys Hexalogic pads are highly rated for it

Not tried the Megs MF system but its supposed to be superb..If a little expensive

The scratches are very light, would hand polish out and its just general light swirl marks that you get on all cars.

Im just looking for that highly polished show look, so you can see yourself in it lol.

I have a DAS6 and use Sonus pads, generally the toughest 2 (SFX1 is toughest) as they get best results on tougher paints I tend to work on. My kit came with 3 MZ polishes - power finish, final finish and a hard cutting compound "gloss finish" I think it's called.

So is the fabia paint quite hard then or medium?

Firstly I notice that you have specified DA's, which for me having started out on a DA is a good base to try different pads and polishes to achieve the desired finish your after.

VAG paintwork is pretty tough and unless your looking to invest in the Megs Microfibre system then you will struggle to correct to a high level with a DA unless you adopt the Kevin Brown Method and the corresponding Pads and Polishes that work best with it.

The reality is that any of the DA's you have specced will do a job for you but it may be worth looking at either the Menz or the Megs system to get the best out of your paintwork, I have detailed a fair few Fabia's including a SE such as yours so you will achieve good results......:)

I think you will add some gloss back to the paintwork but the only way to achieve the 'highly polsihed show look' would be to use a rotary which is a whole new area.........;)

Thats great advice, thanks. Ive seen some of the cars you've detailed and they look amazing! I know im never gonna get a mirror finish, but a good show shine would be good. Reason i thought a DA rather than a rotary is that i thought its safer with less chance of burning through the paintwork, and as ive never used one i think its safer. By the sounds of it ill be best getting a das6 with the megs or menzerna polishes and maybe some dodo juice blue velvet etc, and some medium/ hard pads?

Thanks for the kind words and I hope my details have been of interest.....;)

Spot on with the DA choice and this is indeed how I started, better to gain confidence on a machine is safer to use....;)

All sounds good however I would invest in a better wax or sealant at a cheaper price, Blue Velvet is not very durable.....:(

Thought Skoda had medium paint, not hard. Dont need a rotary either, DA is fine. :smirk:

Ah ok. Any recomendations on a better sealant/wax?

If your using a DA then it's hard IMO but that's just my opinion, apologies if you don't agree with this....:(

Depends on your budget, you could get something twice as durable and half the price and protect your wheels at the same time, such as Collinite 476s or FK 1000P.

There are so many products on the market though, as highlighted above by Chronicbint, just my opinion....:(

Not sure on other Skoda's of course, may have changed on newer cars but the paint on my Octavia was very easy to fix with just a light cutting pad and compound using a Das 6 DA. :)

What combo did you use? Did you complete an IPA wipe down?

Yeah used IPA after the polish. If I recall correctly I used the Menzerna Final Finish with a Yellow Menzerna finishing pad but with some small areas I switched to the medium polishing pad.

Pro is just more powerful, might be worth the extra if you are going to use it a lot. I didnt think I needed the pro and spent the difference on extra bits (spot pads/backing plate).

I'm guessing there weren't many defects on the paintwork then? Just light swirling?

Yeah was fairly good for a 8-9 year old car. Just light swirls when it caught the light, think a DA is fine for the majority of DIY/Home users. Unless the paints totally fecked.
