Interior LED light problem

Featured Replies

I've just bought and fitted some interior LED lights to my 06 plate vRS they are a vast improvement over the standard bulbs but whilst driving along I've spotted a problem.

The bulbs randomly flash at me, does anybody have any idea as to why or whats causing them to do so?I've bought the canbus one's aswell even though certain people say you can get away with normal ones.

Any help or ideas will be much appreciated

Adam

They flash as they are controlled by the convenience module which also controls the wipers, the LEDs require very little power to ignite them. Either swap them for the old ones or wire in a resistor to each bulb.

From what I have read, because they need much less power to light up, so resistors are needed? I`m sure someone with more of an idea will be along soon lol

Ah I see lad's thanks very much for clearing that up, I was just worried something had gone wrong with them lol. I'm sure I can live with them flashing slightly every now and again or is the resistor mod easy enough to do?

never bothered with the resistors as im lazy so swapped them back with the original ones! pm Korban as he knows his LEDs and stuff.

Thanks for the vote of confidence lol

As mattievrs has already pointed out LEDs will light up with very little power and although when you close the door you would think the power would be switched off to the bulb/LED but in reality the voltage just drops to about 2-5 volts not enough to light up a bulb but enough to light up some LEDs. The cars voltage is not actually 12 volts, it can fluctuate any where between about 11.5 to 14.5 volts hence the 2 to 5 volts at the interior light switch as the voltage fluctuates it causes the LEDs to flicker on and of and in some cases the LEDs wil always be on !

The simplest way around this is to insert a 1K ohm resistor across the LED just to drop the voltage below the LEDs lowest limit, It does not dim the lights at all but just stops them either lighting up or flickering.

Hope all this makes sense
