20/24 pin PSU

Featured Replies

replacing my PC MB/CPU with something up to date and decent, with decent memory speed .(Added to fact that MOBO has lot all video output)Problem is that PSU only has a 20 pin connector (at first look ) .Then I noticed two four pin plugs .One I've identified from the new MB user guide as PWR2- CPU supply( two yellow =+12v and two black =gnd/com).Other 4pin plug has one +5(red)/+12(yel)/+3.3 (or)and com ,and has prongs to attach to the 20 pin plug .From wiring diagram in user guide (and on WIKI) it appears that my guess is correct and this PSU was made to be either a 20 /24pin . Anyone in the know confirm this .

your existing PSU with a 20 pin connector will work fine with a 24 pin motherboard, even with 4 of the pins having nothing on them. These 4 pins provide additional power, and are not strictly needed.

Mannyo is correct of course, but I'd use the extra four pins anyway. You will find if you don't that some parts of your board won't support full power for some functions and it mayl become unstable depending on what you are doing or trying to do. It is fairly normal now for PSU's to have a 20/24pin support function in order that the PSU can be used with older boards. Mine is the same and I've run it with both 20pins, and 24pins. I got blue screen a time or two with just 20 pins although it just about ran ok most of the time but was slower.

20-pin is ATX spec, but most use the extra 4 to power on board graphics etc

Thanks folks - had a look at a manufacturers web site ,which confirmed my reasoning .I was fairly confident that I was right ,but nice to be 100% right ,rather than expensive smoke .Jut fired it up and it's gotten to the setup screen without problems .All I have to o now is translate the pidgen english .

Doing that - new MB has only one IDE slot and all my drives are IDE ,les than two year old. I can see the multi boot HDD ,an system boot up ok .To solve the second IDE problem ,I got a PCI-E adaptor from Maplin designed to give some SATA and another IDE from a PCI-E port . Trouble is that though Maplin say it does ,the paperwork doesen't mention the IDE bit ,neither ddoes the attached CD or the makers website .Thought of copying CD to usb flash to install drivers , but can't see any mention of IDE and maker web site can't find the drivers .So it's wait for Maplin tech support, or back to Maplin to ask for help .

What make of adaptor is it? What's the part number? I can probably tell you from my stock of parts, I have most things in order to maintain my network machines and we use some of those adaptors.

They often do not need any drivers, just connect up the cables (40 pin) and ensure you have the jumpers on the drives set correct (one on master, one on slave) and all should work. You generally only need the drivers if you are trying to set them up as RAID.

Thanks guys -problem sorted - PCI-e was ok up to XP -but not on Win7 - so back to Maplin . SWAPPED FOR A sATA cd Drive - now all sorted .Driver CD now seen - possibly an older DVD had problems with it - Win 7 certainly didn't ,XP found all the drivers and all is well .Only problem now is with SATA dvd - at times system fails on start up - at present I've disabled boot functions in Bios for the SATA DVD - and all is well . If SATA DVD is left enabled ,even as a last boot device system hangs on post . Powermax sees drives as SATA first , then HDD0, then HDD1 .Add in BB dongle ( which shows up as HUAWEI DEVICE = cd DRIVE,ETC) and system gets really confused .I now boot with Sata DVD disabled , BB dongle not conected ,and all is well .
