Getting the best out of XDS

Featured Replies

I know it's been touched on briefly but is it better to turn traction control off when driving quickly? Sometimes I've found by booting it in 2nd to come out of a corner if it's damp the light flashes and kills power for a second or two (Also had it once while overtaking. That was a bit unnerving but it was a wet day and I was overenthusiastic with my right foot). Correct me if I'm wrong but if I turn off and exit the same corner doing the same thing XDS will just brake the wheel that's spinning more slightly and get power down quicker? Surely this is better than having power cut completely, the XDS hasn't had a chance to work yet.

I'm still trying how to get the best out of the car but being as smooth as possible is working for me so far.

Interesting point... I'm not sure if the XDS would continue to work independently of the ASR/TCS in case you turned it off. If that was the case then I think you're guessing right, brakes applied only on the spinning wheel and power sent where it should be in order to provide more grip.

With TCS on, I've also found the ESP light flashing quite often, especially when exiting fast roundabouts or when slamming the gas pedal.

I've had ASR come on plenty of times but only once has ESP intervened. I went to overtake a Peugeot and a lorry and half way though the overtake the Peugeot pulled out on me and I slammed on, black wheel touched the grass and it helped keep me straight. Was a very odd feeling but was glad I had it

Im sure in previous threads it was confirmed that the xds will continue to work with the tcs off.

For me personally the tcs is a waste of time. I find it to be really inconsistent in both the situation and the serverity in which it activates. Even switched on I've spun the wheels in 3rd.

this is true, XDS will operate all the time.... so flooring it will be a bit more lairy, but you will still have control, and wont loose so much acceleration as when the TC kicks in..

best thing though martin, is to "squuueeeze" the accelerator, feel the power and grip, and try to control what is going through the front wheels to get the power down without breaking traction... this will give you faster acceleration :)

The trick is not to use the accelerator as an on/off switch.

Imagine theres a piece of string attached between the accelerator and bottom of the steering wheel. When the wheel is on full lock it wouldn't allow you to depress the accellerator as the string would be to taut, but the more you unwind the steering lock the more the accelerator will be able to be depressed.

Me personally I think the xds isn't that good, its no where near as good as a proper differential.

I'm sure one of the guys over on scn was looking into getting a proper dif. Not sure if he ever did or not though

Ill be getting an SQS plate diff fitted tomine

This is what I've always done and always feed the throttle in gradually, feeling how much grip there is. Just wanted to know if I could do anything different with it because it has XDS. Sure it won't be as good as a proper diff but should still be sufficient. It must have been good if VW put it on the GTI's first

Most of the time you'll not notice the XDS working or it won't be working.

It can however be used to tighten the corner up after entry by adding power which would usually just add understeer.

Though this only appears to work in lower gears with revs on.

Best advise is try everything and find what works for you as no two people or cars ever drive exactly the same.

Yep.
