How many miles from a tank? From full to orange light coming on?

Featured Replies

How many miles do people get from a full tank? From full to the orange light coming on? I am interested to get some figures. MPG figures tell one thing but surely actual miles is king?

I currently get between 410 and 440 from my 170 DSG hatch. Is this normal?

You should get a little more than that, I have a Skoda Estate 170 4x4 and typically get about 450 before the light comes on. You can see my consumption to date on the attached link; http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overview/45-Skoda/400-Superb.html?fueltype=1&power_s=170&power_e=170&exactmodel=4x4&powerunit=2 under PeteT.

About 480 or so from my PD140 with DSG.

I do a good mix of driving and do tend to go heavy on the right foot. I don't try and drive economically. Are your figures from trying to max out the efficiency?

Try to max out the efficiency, generally, but sometimes I just want to get to where I am going as quickly as the roads will allow. I would say adapting the driving style has a big impact. The only other factor which has made a noticeable difference is the fitting of winter tyres. 225/40 R18 summer tyres swapped for 205/55 R16 has given me a 10% benefit in fuel economy with like for like driving.

600+ in 1.6cr twindoor, but more in warmer weather. I do a lot of A road and dual carraigeway miles

I get an average of 535 miles per tankful. The warning light usually comes on with 90 miles to go, but I always fill up at around 30/40 to go so I get about 475-480 before the light comes on. My real world consumption over 54,500 miles using the brim-to-brim fill up is currently 46.814 mpg. My drive is mainly A roads and dual carriageway. Consumption has dropped recently following a tyre change - but not sure whether this is the colder/wet weather also influencing things.

170CR DSG Twindoor.

Our light goes on at about 750km. Mixed fast driving.

With my 170TDI hatch, the light goes on just over the 500 mile mark. I tend to get just over 600 miles to a tank. I am not an aggressive driver, and have reduced my motorway speeds to around 65mph, purely to help reduce the fuel cost. I record my mpg in a logbook, and am generally returning around 47mpg.

manual or dsg?

I am guessing manual.

By way of comparison, the orange low fuel light of my Greenline recently illuminated at 662 miles. This is based on 85% motorway/A roads and 15% urban.

That's good range. I'm getting around 500-550 at present.

I miss my A4's large fuel tank but nothing else :-)

You guys "might" average slightly more if you only ever put in half tanks at a time, and logged the same. Must be like lugging an extra bag of cement and a bit more with a full tank compared to half at a time? :)

On a superb perhaps %% wise there is little in it, say compared to a fabia anyway.

I'm about the same. Tend to drive longish distances between fill ups.

The other day the DTE reading was 20 miles. Could only squeeze 52 lites in, therefore I had at least 8 remaining, probably more like 9 if you allow for the filler pipe to carry some additional volume. Therefore I had 2 gallons remaining, so that's at least 80 miles, plus 20 indicated, therefore 100 miles, which would, in effect give over 500 miles on a tank.

The question is how brave are you? Do you fill up when indicated, or do you go for dead reckoning?

60 litres is 13.19 gallons [divide by 4.55] so at 40 mpg average that should be 527 miles, or even 593 at 45 mpg average.

In other words the orange light lies!

Agreed, but I would spend half my life in a filling station, something I am not prepared to have to do.

I could also remove the spare wheel, but I am, again, not prepared to wait to be "rescued" if I get a puncture.

Sometimes convenience costs.
