Engine missfires after idling for over 5 mins

Featured Replies

Hello Guys and Girls! Just joined your community as I've recently purchased a 1996 20K mileage 1.3 Felicia, for the princely sum of £450. Unfortunately it's just started to miss-behave as follows:

Car runs fine until it has been idling for around 5 to 10 minutes. Car then looses power and engine misfires. Then it will not restart.

When engine has cooled down, then no problems. Temp gauge reading normal, and cooling fans operate properly.

HELP!

Is it lumpy before it cuts out, or does it cut out suddenly?

IT IS lumpy before it cuts out.

Choking up? too rich? choke on when hot? temp sensor?

yea temp sender if it has the plastic thermo housing or could be the hall sensor failing (crank sensor which is on top of the gearbox)

It seems the temp sensor is the cause of everything on this car! I know the mk3 Astra C20XE engine has the same problem and solution 'Change the temp sensor!'

Many thanks to you all, for your help. I'll check the Temp Sensor first, and let you know the outcome!

Update....Problem solved. Complete centre electrode that runs through ceramic sleeve on spark plug No.1, had become fully detached. Secondly, one of the HT leads (plug No.3) had started to break-down. Infact (after closer inspection), HT leads, plugs, Dist-Cap, and rotor arm ALL looked like original fittings. Changed air filter as a matter of course, and will do oil and coolant change next week. Just shows that these cars will run and run, even when some components are failing!

Many thanks to you all!!!
