Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG HSM lens

Featured Replies

I'm after a lens to shoot in low light and for portraits of the little un. I have a Canon 40D which doesn't get as much use as it should but I'm getting better at using it, except in low light. It's blurry central with the stock zoom lens, so been looking into the prime lenses.

I initially considerred the Canon 50 mm 1.4 USM but then saw a review for the Sigma, and seeing as the prices have come down, I think why not?

Anyone have experience of this lens and it's performance in low light? Any pictures you can share?

It's an ok lens , but sigma quality control is shoddy at best . If you do buy one , play with it for a while make sure its a keeper!

Strange all I've ever seen are generally excellent reviews against this lens, with just the odd one or two saying about QC issues.

Personally I like the £100 50mm f1.8 II, yes it's cheap, rattles like hell, mad of plastic, but it's a cracking little lens, OK I could spend a couple of hundred on the f1.4, but I don't use the existing 50mm very much at all.

If you do go for the Sigma, do have a good hunt around for the best price, you can also get some good deals from Onestop DIgital too.

I think the days of their qc issues have passed...

Get the Canon 1.8. There's &£@ all difference in speed compared to the 1.4 and you can treat yourself and the little one on the difference.
