Xenon headlights and mot

Featured Replies

Wondered if you'd quote that one, the 2001 P11 Primera Sport+ and SE+ were equipped with Xenon from the factory and had headlight washing systems as standard, so if it wasn't a Sport+ or SE+ it was an aftermarket conversion and if it was it had been in a smash and the headlight wash had been removed.

Specs are available here:

http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/nissan/primera/hatchback-1999/equipment/

I'd also bet that as they were around at the same time as my 2000 Accord-R which have both washing and levelling systems for it's factory fitted Xenons that the Primera's (Sport+ and SE+) would have had them too.

Carl.

Funny, mine had them as factory fitted, it was even in the handbook. heres a picture of my car.

Ive also seen so pretty standard looking Corsa's with them fitted however since I haven't owned one I cant comment but next door but one has a 05 reg SXi I think it is with what looks like xenons with no washers.

Some Fiat punto's have xenons with no washers. As far as im aware if they have washers ad self leveling they must work, if not it cant be tested an therefore cant fail. Being as ive been to the mot test station and he never asked where the washers were and didnt say it would fail (he would have said!) id say it will pass. Time will tell, its due soon! Mine are genuine retro fitted headlamps, not hid's btw.

Someone somewhere is mis-interpreting the rules.

I'm 99% sure that Corsa C's didn't have xenons, not even as an option. They had projectors, yes, but halogen bulbs (few friends have them like this). Same with the 2nd shape Punto - I used to own one and it was a projector, with halogen lights.

Hyundai coupe which swmbo had had projectors and not xenons. Easy to confuse.

This must be a record for most posts made about the same topic lol.

Fair play to mr furby for having the sense to go down to his tester and ask.

Some cars are still made new with xenons and no washers or auto levellers. Hyundai i40 being one of them. I saw it unregistered in the showroom yesterday.

Xenon lights are available as an option pack only which includes headlamp washers and dynamic headlamp leveling amongs other things as part of the same pack.

Cheers! Thought it would give me a heads up before the mot, so i could have at least changed them.

People can argue about this till the cows come home, but im satisfied my car will pass (with no favours from the tester). I guess it all depends on how the tester interprets the new rules.

cheers it was cleared up just after I posted that by another memebr, the car I saw had projectors not xenons.

Evening all, I have read this through the Fiat Punto and Corsa share the same platform and a lot of parts. Some of the Vauxhall engines fitted to the Corsa (maybe other models) are Fiat sourced. I am sure people get confused with projection lights as they look like Xenon daytime, they are produce a better more powerful light then just bulbs. My Octavia 2001 has Xenons as standard and self leveling and head light washers.

Xenon lights need washers by law if OME.

Don`t forget it reads to me that for the first 3 months will be a grace period in relation to the new rules, and if there are any potential future fails for the first 3 months they will be an advisory only. I think that`s right. So HID boys & girls get you MOT`s now and enjoy another year!! B)

Or take a water pistol with you to the MOT, when the tester pulls the washers just fire the pistol at your lights so water is trickling down the headlight units when he walks around the front. Also just as he turns the lights on to check the leveling system gently lean on the back of the car so the lights move slightly on his monitoring board. LOL SORTED :D

Except if you read the thread, they aren't required if not fitted. Ie if fitted, they must work otherwise if they aren't there is nothing to test.

well that was a interesting read, not sure why its relevent though. as jrw said you dont need them, but if fitted they must work.

I have confussed projectors with xenons but the primera did have them becuase they cost a bomb to replace compaired to the halogen ones!

Under many circumstances with hills etc, even with perfectly adjusted headlights, you can still have them pointing directly at the eyes of oncoming drivers. You see this every time people go over speed bumps. Let's have a campaign to ban speed bumps because it blinds people :dull:

My dad's 2004/5 Subaru WRX impreza has factory Xenons, manaul levelling and NO washers. But it is a japanese import though.

That has passed all it's MOTs, and I'm guessing it will pass future MOTs because it's all factory fitted stuff

ie factory produced cars can come without the extra kit, ie Ariel Atom, KTM X-bow, Caterham and other such sports cars. This is why the amendment was made else it would have made all these OEM cars techcially an MOT failure which wouldn't have gone down too well.

As an Atom owner I wasn't aware you could get Xenons... Most people upgrade to projectors. (Quick check at the forum shows the odd example though not sure they're road legal)

Yes that is right, 100%

Would anyone like to know what VOSA say?

Or would it be just white noise?

Carl.

Car passed its mot with the oe xenons, BUT only because the ruling on xenons has been suspended. The new rules did state that cars fitted with hid/led lights must have a washer system and self leveling, but for some reason vosa have suspended the ruling for now. The other new rule that might affect people is cats. Where a catalytic converter was fitted as standard, a cat must remain in place, so if anyone has de-catted, its a fail (under the new rules) BUT, if you have a "visible" cat, it can still pass, so an empty cat should be ok. There are quite a few little changes, but i think these are the ones that could affect most people.

WIll have to see what they do about the xenons.

This is only what i found out on saturday so dont argue with me, im only letting people know if they want to know. Your mot tester might interpret the rules differently, i just thought id update. :)

Interesting on the "empty cat" - maybe this is how I get the sliencer in my new system, but fitting a smashed out cat instead of an actual silencer....

I asked if a broken/smashed internal cat was used would it pass. He said, its only a visual check and as long as it passes the smoke test its would. My smoke was 0.69, the limit was 1.5 i think.

Asked a local mot'er the other week, he said cat's are still only required on "spark ignition engines" which is petrol's isn't it? Best get some washers fitted next for the lights by the sounds of it!

Mine passed with a de-cat, with no advisories. Well, not for the exhaust. So it may be down to each tester, but personally I'd still at least try explaining why I thought it should pass based on VOSA's document.

hi mate are your lights hid kits furby let me on pm me
