No experience myself but have a look on here AV Forums - Camcorders and video editing forum .Have a look through the sticky for some reviews n stuff. Also you may need to sign up to see all the threads in the forum, not to sure, friendly bunch though and sure they'll be happy to answer any questions etc.

I had a look at these a few years back to compare to my DAT-based camcorder. They looked a good solution if you wanted to just film and burn, but the editing facilities seemed a bit limited. May be different now though! :D

I started out with a budget of 500 quid too when I bought my camcorder and ended up with a Sony TRV-33 (I think that's the right model number) which was about 600 quid all in. I didn't budget for tapes, a bag or a long-life battery which was another 100 quid on top of that. Camera has loads of features and felt right in my hand compared to the cheaper Canon's. As with digital cameras, ignore the digital zoom figures and look at the optical ones.

I went into my local Comet superstore to try out the cameras and compare them before I bought them and then found the one I wanted and bought it at Jessops through their Internet price-match scheme. Plenty of reviews of cameras on the web too, if you find a model you're interested in :D
