VRS Heater fan failed :-(

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has come across the problem that I am having or has any ideas on where to look before I book it into the garage.

I have a 2006 vrs with climatronic which all works fine apart from the heater fan does not spin up on any setting. It just stopped working a few days ago. I have removed the glovebox and checked all of the connectors which seem fine. I have also put a direct supply to the fan and it spins up to full speed so its not that. All of the other bits work and I can see and hear the motors moving the flaps etc when settings are changed.

I have spoken to the dealers who say they haven't come across this fault before which worries me a bit when it is £80/hour to diagnose it!

Any help or advice on this would be very much appreciated as I can't really afford a garage bill straight after Christmas and it is rather cold in the car at the moment!

Thanks,

Matt

On my old MK2 Leon in had the same issue. However once the dealer had swapped it out for an inspection it worked perfectly afterwards. I suspect they may have forgotten the second swap!

The blower motors however are easily available on fleabay for a lot less than a dealers parts department. It's a common enough failure tbh.

Thanks for the replies so far, but sill no joy :-(

I spoke to a mechanic at the dealer who said that if the fan works it must be the control unit which is the one piece directly behind the heater controls. I have taken it out and checked for loose connections etc, but it is still not working.

The question is, do I buy one from ebay for about £65 and give it a go, or do I just let the dealers have a go?

I suppose these is still a chance that changing that part will still not fix it, them I am stuck with a control unit that I don't need.

somebody correct me if im wrong but the control unit is part of the fan, my fan worked with 12v straight on it. with you having climatronic the fan speed is controlled electronically by this unit . i dont think you can buy them separately im sure i looked into it and couldnt find one. depends on how much money you want to spend i went with the new option instead of a second hand unit.

prices have gone up since i bought mine £280 at eurocarparts.

forgot about 25% discount brings it down to £198!

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the dealers may have given me duff advice. Unfortunately I have already ordererd a dash control unit although it is a second hand one from ebay. Will give that a try first anyway. If that doesn't work then I guess a new fan unit may be the only option.

I will post a reply when the unit arrives later this week hopefully.

Looks like I need a trip to the dealers anyway now to reset the air con light as I turned the ignition on with the glovebox removed... oops!

thats exactly what i did !

i got a friend who used to have a garage , he still had his snap on diagnostics equipment , he reset it no problem if you know any decent independant garages.

hope the dash control unit didnt cost you much, it sounds just like the problem i had, the other bummer for me was spending £230 on the fan , then discovering i had taken out a warranty

Well, the facial control unit arrived and I plugged it in and I still have the same problem so I guess its the fan unit itself as furn suggested.

Are the fan units fairly easy to change yourself or should I just book it into the garage and be done with it?

its dead easy to change i did mine outside euro car parts in about 10 mins.

under the glove box in the passenger footwell remove a trim cover, then you will see the fan unplug the connector and it simply twists out , manoeuvre it out and simply replace with the new one. i think it took me a couple of goes to get it in the right place before you twist it to lock it in position. it would probably be easier with the glovebox out to see what you are doing , refit the trim under the glove box first i remember i couldnt get it back in place correctly with the glovebox in.

sorry it isnt too detailed but its fairly straight forward once you get into it.

let me know how you get on

Thanks furn.

I have removed the fan as you described very easily. It is very stiff to turn and looks a bit rusty in the middle so I guess that the motor has probably blown the built in controller.

I have it booked in to the dealers next week to be fixed but I am going to try and repair the old fan before if I can as its nearly £300 for a new one.

Well, I freed up the motor a bit and oiled it then ran it on full for a bit and it freed up a bit more. Refitted it and it works :-) woohoo!!

Will cancel that appointment at the dealers now I think although I guess my fix wont last for ever so I will budget for a new fan.

I also now have a spare dash heater control panel if anyone needs one!

Hi mate, it will probably last quite a while now you have freed it up, if you give it a bit of lubricant every 6-12 months or so it will probably last forever.

Had the same issue on a previous jetta and it went on for 3 years without problem.

easy save of 300 notes.
