Mk1 CANBUS?

Featured Replies

Right , call me thick if you like (your thick!) but is my car CANBUS or not? I have been reading posts which suggest it is but things like me fitting LED sidelights and Auto Dim mirror without any issues makes me think it cant be. So is it or isnt it? its a 2002 51 Octavia elegance Estate 4x4 1.8t ARX just incase you miss it in the signature. :wonder:

my mate has a Vectra which is and he tried to fit the same bulbs I have, and instantly got error codes and still got problems when fitting supposedly CANBUS error free ones?

It technically has canbus in it yes, but it's nowhere near as complex as the newer cars (Vectras from 2002 onwards included). The idea behind canbus is to have all the control modules in the car talking through the canbus to save on wire costs etc, and to simplify diagnostics. On the vectra, there is a huge module behind the carpet in the boot with a flat ribbon cable running through the car.

I fitted LED number plate lights last night and they work perfectly. No issues whatsoever, well, except rusty screws!

Well... LED sidelights don't work in mine. I have Xenons; don't know if that makes a difference or not.

****ing annoying though.

Whilst CAN-BUS is used for some things, the majority of components on the car do not use it. The diagnostics use K-line (not CAN-BUS) and it is not considered to be a 'CAN-BUS car'.

CAN-BUS is only used for some ECU, dash insert, CCU and door controller communication.

Ah right, so does that mean I may run into issues if I fit power fold mirrors like i was planning?

Not if your fitting parts from something like a MK1 Leon.

Have you tried turning them through 180 degrees and then re-fitting them?

LEDs are polarity sensitive, so need to be fitted the right way round.

Yes, did that, and then again, still nothing.

I don't think my car likes me very much really.

I have factory Xenon's and fitted LED side lights on Wednesday, don`t get me wrong it was a mission taking the lights out and then taking them apart, whilst thinking please Xenon's please work after I have stripped you down and changed things around. The most annoying thing I found was after I had put the sidelight bulb in and being scared of the sticker saying something like major shock hazard, I rebuilt the unit and then plugged it in to check, I had put the LED in the wrong way around so it didn't work. So had to do it all again. The pack said if the side light does not work remove bulb and try in the other polarity!! Could it be you also put them in wrong first time around? :wonder: WELL JUST CARRIED ON READING AND I SEE WE HAVE HAD THIS CONVERSATION ALREADY :giggle:

DID YOU HAVE A DODGY SET OF BULBS?
