Mooing brakes going forward

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever had this. I was on my way home tonight on country roads. I was doing about 80 when it started and stayed till about 20 mph and it only happens if a steer to the right, even only enough for a slow lane change right up to a full on swerve. If I apply slight break pressure the noise is more high pitched harder breaking stops the noise and if I pull the hand break slightly the noise goes. Only starts after about 3 miles hard driving.

The mooing brakes are usually only when you reverse and are the rear calipers only. You might have a wheel bearing on its way out?

Was hopping you wouldn't say that. I thought it was connected to the breaks as it went if I applied the hand break slightly. I'll jack the car up tomorrow and check the wheel bearings. Forgot to say but the noise is from the rear of the car.

Might also be worth checking whether you've got any meat on the rear pads, the wear sensor is only in one of the front pads so the rears can wear out without you realising unless you keep an eye on them... that said a set of rear pads should last years anyway

Checked wheel bearings today all was good pads are about halfway but the rear drivers disk is a bit rusty in places. The pads obviously not touching the whole disk and cleaning it. But would that cause the noise. Im going to take the disk off and clean it up and the pads. Both rear calipers have been replaced at some point in the cars life as there not green. Thinking off putting new disks and pads on the back as the pas side disk is on its last legs and was an advisory on the last mot. Is it the stupid wind back calipers in these?

The fact that you state that pulling on the handbrake stopped the noise suggests it's the rear brakes at fault. Sticking rear calipers is a common prob on all Golf mk1v derived cars so its worth stripping them down & cleaning them up.

BTW Hammerite smooth green is a close match to Skoda green if you want to paint your calipers while they're off.

Thanks I will be ordering some paint now lol. Gona give the rear breaks a good clean up when the paint comes. And see how thing are after that.

Yep you'll need the Laser 1314 windback tool or similar for the rear calipers.

Check the guide pins are sliding in and out properly when you check the calipers.
