Vrs tdi ,new or used!

Featured Replies

Hello everyone I have a small dilemma and can't make up my mind ;(

I'm a few weeks looking to buy a diesel vrs but iv looked at 4 already and walked away from them all as they were just not mint,I'm very very fussy and I'm basically looking for an as new 2008-2009 vrs tdi,I'm just finding it impossible to find a mint one,I don't want one that has every been painted or touched and I don't want a uk one as the Irish ones are better specked too!

I'd also like one with no more than 80k ( 50k miles)

In Ireland a 2008 are making around 12-13k euro and a 2009 making 16-17k euro.

Am I asking too much or just been too fussy,I'm a mechanic/ vehicle tester by trade and have a long history of sports cars ie skylines/silvias/mr2 turbo etc and all were extremely clean,it's just hard find 3-4 year old cars still like new,

Also am I a lot better off with the cr over the pd? I drove a few pd,s and found the kick from the turbo very good so I'm wondering is the more progressive pull in the cr kind of boring or does the cr feel slower?

I can buy a new vrs diesel for 26-27 k euro,is this the only way I will get the perfect one I wonder!

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

CR's are better, doesn't feel slower once you are used to it (drives petrol like).

I have a mint one apart from a stone chip on the bonnet ;)

You can get a new CR VRS from Drivethedeal.com for about £16854 = €20284 approx, might not be quite as good spec (you guys get folding mirrors for a start) but quite a bit better than €27k...

Well the garage can reg one up for me as a demo for €25.750 which isn't too bad,I'm also keen on the blue or white. Also I want manual not auto.

The initial quote was a completely standard manual version, I reckon a Race Blue one would come out under €21,000, saving nearly €5,000...

The CR drives completely different to a PD

If you love the PD kick then I suggest you test drive a CR so you are not left disappointed.

They may not be any slower, but that's not the way they feel, a 170CR feels almost gutless compared to a PD130 IMO.

So ur basically saying a 130pd feels faster than a 170cr , how could this be?

You don't get the kick from the turbo. I have both and the CR is certainly quicker as once you are used to driving it (SWMBO has the PD130 now) and you get back in the 130, it seems slow in comparison as if it hasn't got enough puff to do things such as overtake....It is literally a mind trick with the turbo giving you everything in one go but once you work the CR correctly it seems a lot quicker :giggle:

So ur basically saying a 130pd feels faster than a 170cr , how could this be?

Yes because as jrw says you get the huge kick from the PD, when I test drove the 140CR and 170CR (whilst I owned a PD130) I left very underwhelmed by the CR driving experience, if I wanted petrol characteristics then I would buy a petrol.

I suppose I have been spoilt as the vast majority of petrol's I have owned have been big 6 cylinder engines with loads of torque. The std CR doesn't give you that feel (look at the speedo and you will realise however you are certainly 'pushing on')

A remapped CR however is a different story :giggle:

It basically sounds like you're describing turbo lag?

Early Formula 1 cars needed full throttle before the apex (up to 4 seconds according to Mark Blundell) because of turbo lag...

As technology improves you get less lag, more progressive power (so much so it probably doesn't feel like it).

I'd wager putting a PD170 against a CR170 would be close, but the CR would win...

test drive both tbh but CR is more refined a lot quieter and as JRW says once you know how it works its a good tool. I had a Mk1 Fabia VRS remapped to 173bhp and then moved onto the new octavia cr170 ...... defiantly from what you have said worth getting a CR then having it remapped. I had mine done in NI if you want a recommendation to a good reputable custom mapper 205-15bhp sensibly you would achieve and made a world of difference. 4mpg more in the car after it on same 900 mile drive I did there from Holland and return leg it was loaded up big time not empty like on way!

BTW have you looked at UK spec cars in NI few buy them without a good few extras VRT cost might be worth looking atfor the 008 ish ones.

Don't forget the Octavia II VRS Ireland thread at top of forum

It basically sounds like you're describing turbo lag?.

Quite the opposite, with a PD the power is there straight away from very low revs, it does run out of puff quicker but by that time you would be well over the speed limit anyway.

The CR is very linear - just like a 4 cyl N/A petrol engine, again no lag at all, but no turbo surge either.

Don't forget the CR is not new technology, it has been fitted into production cars from the mid 90's IIRC, if VAG could of reduced the emissions of a PD to the newer acceptable levels then IMO they would still be using it.

I have learned to like my CR over the last 18K miles, the only difference is I loved the power delivery of my PD130 (this is the important bit as SWMBO's PD105 Golf is just 'OK')

Are we talking about a 2.0CR in an octavia vrs or a tank? :p the vrs is fairly light on its feet but a good custom remap can suit it to most peoples needs. I got 51.7mpg today sitting at 80 on motorway with cruise control on from a cold start with plenty of slowing down in between.

I'm going to drive a new cr and see what I think,I drove a 2007 vrs 170 and I was very impressed, the injector problem is not an issue as vw are doing them under recall here now,

I'm also not sure do I prefer the new face lift model over the older pre 09 front!

We don't get the folding mirrors as standard in Eire, but we do get horrific road surfaces!!

I am more specifically my bionic right leg can confirm the "horrific" road surfaces!! :'(

Hi guys this deal is still not final as I'm still in two minds on weather to just go the extra €3500 for the new one ;( also the new one would have sat nav and controls on the steering which the 2011 one doesn't have! I'm so confused about what to do ;(

In my other mind should I just buy a 2008 because I really do think the pd engine feels quicker!

What's peoples opinions on the facelift vrs vs the older front?

Thanks in advance.

CR and remap! over PD for me (said as a former PD owner). As for the €3500 for new........ the extra bits it has and the (I think for ROI) 2 year warranty would be worth it to me! As you will be the first owner and you know no one has abused it before you for sure and of course less miles, brand new tyres etc. When you come to sell higher speced car will do better and it will be a better car to sit in with extra bits and new ones also come with the "new car smell" DO IT! IMO

I would have thought a 6 month old (prev year model with 12000km on it would have depreciated more than only €3500! sounds like main dealers price.

If its affordable to you personally and you intend to hold on to it for a few years I would pay the extra for sure!

I have just bought Octavia vRS 2.0 Diesel 2 weeks ago, ex demo 4000 miles on the clock which was an absolute bargain. Leather Interior, heated seats, front and rear parking sensors, electric sunroof, spare wheel etc, which I would have had to pay as optional extras. It's my first Skoda and first diesel, and I am loving it. I say go for it, you won't be disappointed!

The car was not abused because the owner of the skoda dealer drove it for 5 months and is in his 50s I'd say, it's just not a huge diff in money between the new and year old one,the reason it's only 3500€ in the difference is I can buy a new one as demo but no miles on it. The second hand one is €22500 and a new reged up on is €25800 so not much in it,I'd also prob go for the white in the new one it's only 6 weeks wait,I could get a new blue in 4 weeks.

Can someone tell me when did the vrs start coming with radio controls on the steering wheel as the 6 month old one has no controls on the steering!ill also get sat nav standard on the new one.

Actually I was looking at the specs in the new ones and it says in the brochure that door mirrors fold by holding the lock button on the key.

Have you tried yours?

My 10 reg does not have it.

What u think of the power compared to a pd170 , the pd feels a fair bit faster but that's all in the head I think!

I'm thinking of ordering a new white one,

Does anyone know when the vrs came with the multifunction steering wheel?the 11 reg one I seen doesn't have it!
