Stiff reverse gear?

Featured Replies

I've got a 2000 Mk1 Octy, 130,000 on the clock. It's become very stiff getting the box out of reverse gear. 1st gear is stiffer than it used to be too.

Could this just be the transmission fluid or more likely the clutch? Would I need a whole clutch assembly or just a specific part?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Id say clutch or the clutch cable. Mine did this and it was my clutch pedal not releasing fully. just needed my foot under it

Could be gear linkage cable adjustment.

Had the same problem, and solve it after replacing clutch kit and DMF

Clutch is hidraulic not cable .

sorry i did mean gear linkage cable!

Replacement of the gearbox fluid certainly won't do any harm, especially at that mileage. I'm presuming it's never been changed?

Not sure if the gearbox fluid has been changed or not so I'll start there. What should I expect to pay for a clutch & DMF to be fitted at an independent garage?

Just noticed there is a slight change in engine noise when putting the clutch in at idle. Would this confirm the clutch or could it still be the gear linkage cable?

Thanks for all your replies.

I have the same issue but it only seems to be there when cold, I am going to look at the linkages 1st, clean and spray with WD40 etc if possible, then look at fluid then if all else fails a new clutch.

Gear linkage cables are adjustable (and free if you know how, quite easy). Then start looking into clutch probs.

Interesting you say it is worst when cold - perhaps I'll hang on until this cold spell passes and see if it improves.

I found this link to adjust the gear linkage cables on another thread on here - I'll repost it here for others: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp9ggefOjAE

If it's only when cold could it be thatthe gearbox fluid isn't thenright viscosity? I've had a few cars that don't like the cold

as rick says if its only when cold its more than likly fluid! a good flush out and some nice new stuff should do the trick

well at 116000 I think the old girl deserves some eh? :smirk:
