Cambelt replacement question

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Got my Cambelt kit today and the cam and crank licking tool.

I have been looking at the guides and all seems ok to do but why do you need to loosen the 3, 13 mm bolts on the camshaft pulley? Surely you time it up put the locking tools in place and realeased the tension remove belt.

What is the reason for loosening the bolts on the camshaft.

Cheers.

You must do this in order to set accurate valve and injector timing.

If the camshaft was positively driven by gears, then prob no bolts would be needed in the first place, but because its driven by a rubber toothed belt which all tend to stretch by varying ammounts when put under tension, a mechanism needs to be put in place to allow for adjustment ie the camshaft bolts.

TBH if you dont do the job properly and slacken off the cam bolts then the locking tools were a waste of money....tipex would have done the same $hite job.

Bill.

PS I would'nt recommend you use a "cam and crank licking tool" lol.

It enables you to set the timing 100% accurate. If you didn't loosen the bolts, it would be almost impossible to set the timing right.

I actually came across this on my missus' Ibiza PD130. The last person/garage to do the cambelt used yellow paint to mark up the original locations of the cam and crank sprockets!!!

Once I set the crank at TDC, the cam sprocket was well out! Suffice to say once it was done properly, car run so much better.
