Wants to go back to being a learner

Featured Replies

Shouldn't be an issue as long as you explain what you need. Adelaide, who provide the IAM insurance are based in Northern Ireland. But no idea who else to approach.

I've found admiral ok, they are far cheaper for my brother who is on a provisional (which for the record is cheaper than when he passes!). Might be worth going down the multi-car route.

Seems more insurance related pot luck this. When I passed a couple of years ago mine stayed the same, as did my sisters a couple of months ago.

That said, some friends with Quinn had policies go from ~£1,000 -£2,000 to more like £5,000 after passing! They all moved elsewhere!

What's really gauling, is I've worked out I can write off either of my cars in a tree/lampost/any crash without a 3rd party (same was true for my RX-8 before I sold it), and I'd be better off to pay for a new car myself, than get the insurance involved. They'll take their huge 'you're-young,-let's-charge-you-cos-you're-more-likely-to-crash,-but-we're-not-discriminating-on-age-really' excess + my voluntary one, then give a sub-standard payout, and then raise the next 5 (?) premiums by a massive amount, to the point where I'll have paid more to them, than I would to get a new car.

Hate them! emoticon-0146-punch.gif

Of course, if your car is worth more, then this wont be true.

People must bring doing something wrong as my mrs passed her test in October and to insure her on her Fiat Grande Punto 1.2 (insurrance group 2) as the main user but me as the policy holder is only £340 all in fully comp that's with admiral. She's 23.

What are people saying to the insurance companies to get quotes over £2000?

Take it you've tried the fully comp, with a very high excess (£500+) as this often works out cheaper than TPFT and also allows her to build up a starting NCD.

I've just paid for my insurance this week, 19, b postcode, passed pass plus, 2years no claims, 1.9tdi, mods declared, both parents on as named drivers, £745 with admiral

I can assure you that I've done nothing wrong, and have worn my figers and keyboard out trying every conceivable avenue and configuration so far.

Being still at school isn't helping. Seems insurance companies do not like school students or 17 year olds.

My son managed to get a quote via Moneysupermarket for a 'mere' £1300 tpf&t last night. Sadly he typed in that she was a mature student. I corrected it this morning and the price shot up to £1870. Best so far though granted.

The fight will continue unabated tomorrow

Postcodes do seem to make a substantial differnce it seems.

CH here.

Insurance for young drivers is a bloody joke!

Cheaper as a provisional licence holder than having a full licence. All because they are supervised as a learner so not as big a risk!

Pass plus makes little difference and not all ins companies give discount for doing it.

Here's a good one....

If you become unemployed the premium goes UP! By as much as 60% !!!!

On the grounds you have more time to be driving around.

So the cost of fuel isn't taken into account then??

Can't afford to eat on £67.50 a week because you have to fill the car up so you can get to the job centre every week to sign on and attend all the "you must attend or you'll lose your benefit" meetings.

Rant over, I'll go back to sleep now

Read somewhere recently...internet I think...that premiums have shot up for everyone becuase of the huge increase in 'whiplash' claims.

The way things are going, I can see this reason becoming more and more prevelant as folk try and claw back what they feel is rightly or wrongly being robbed off them.

Not a healthy situation, and I'm not condoning it either.

The whole indusry needs a damned good looking at and sorting out.

I agree that vehicle insurance in the UK needs a massive shake up.

Perhaps they should adopt a similar system to other countries?

The simplest have basic (third party only) insurance included with the registration (Road Tax) which is renewed each year.

When you buy a new car you pay the registration fee before you can drive the car from the dealer.

If you buy second hand you must get the transfer done and registration paid for before driving the car away.

Being able to do it online, to cut waiting time, and automatic update of registration database and wider use of ANPR would stop the problem of new owners not updating the vehicle details.

If you want additional insurance (Fully Comp) you buy it in the normal way.

The benefit is that every car on the road is automatically covered so if you have an accident you have no worries about being able to claim from the driver who caused it.

There are much lower costs involved in enforcing the system. No registration, no Insurance, no driving the car.

As that bloody annoying meerkat says "simples"

One advantage of being an OAP is Full Comp insurance from Liverpool Vic. for 240 GBP.

This is true I suppose, but only one of very few advantages to being an oler fart I suppose.

I'm not a million years behind you btw. :'(

And yet it's fairly well known that an old fart (as you put it) is more likely to have a prang when they are out, due to poorer vision and slower reaction times.

Well. Nearly 2 months on, and still no closer to solving this problem, as I haven't won the lottery or had an exceedingly rich relative snuff it and leave us a fortune.

Had a 'phone call off one of these 'black box' insurance companies yeterday, asking dod I know about them and how they can help reduce the cost of insurance for youngsters, as they understand just how difficult things are, and would I like a no obligation quote?

"It'll only take 15 minutes"

Well he seemed so pleasant and sure that he'd finally be able to help me, that I rerally couldn't say no.

After he'd inputed all the relevant information, he asked me to wait whilst the computer munched the info.

I could hear him coughing and asked him if everything was ok?

He eventually spoke and was stuttering.

What I asked him?

He told me he didn't want to say as he was far too embarrased and apologised profusely for wasting my time.

Puzzled as he hadn't actually given me any info, I pushed him harder...WHAT I asked him again?

Errrrr, cough, cough, I'm so so sorry............£17,515.

I merely laughed and told him that my rantings at poor insurance call center sraff are well and truly over, and not to take it to heart

He was more staggered than he thought I was going to be judging by his voice.

Pretty poor state of affairs when the customers are apologising to the insurance companies due to their embarrasment

wow. beggars belief!

Errrrr, cough, cough, I'm so so sorry............£17,515.

Holy ****ing **it!

That's bloody ridiculous.

My wife passed when she was 24, (she's 28 now) did pass plus, then did a year in a 900cc Suzuki Swift

as a named driver on a policy in my name. She then changed jobs to a company 50miles away and the

only way there was to drive. Essex to Surrey M25 road to hell with Datrford crossing wacky races twice

a day without fail. She was still a novice driver really having only used the Suzuki once or twice a week,

This was a a car weighing just 750kg with a whopping 50 horsepower, no airbag, no ABS, no Air-con, no power steering

skinny little tyres and not even servo assisted brakes. Great little shopping/town car but no daily motorway hack

that's for sure! In a crash you'd be better off sitting in a baked bean tin really. Anything bigger passing at any speed

used to blow the car off course easily and the brakes were scary if you ever had to stop quickly from 60+

With all the foreign lorry drivers on that stretch, and having seen many accidents involving them whilst I used the M25

over many years both at work and because I lived right next to the M25 ever since it opened.

I soon realised that combined with her inexperience, the huge multi lane sections, the daily doses of Dartford crossing

mayhem and a daily 100mile round trip, that the Suzuki had to go.

So, we needed a better, safer motorway car and bought the SDI from Progress Skoda chopping in the Suzuki.

In the package, we got a weeks free insurance as it was an approved used car and a later got a quote

from Skoda for 12 months continuing the free cover for an additional fee of £2700. And I thought that was a

**ss take tbh! She wasn't a teenager for christs sake but ringing round found similar quotes

In the end we started a multi car policy with Admiral as I had accrued full no claims over a number of years

which could be used on the joint policy bringing the cost down for her by default and association.

It worked out cheaper by far.

We were living in Harold Hill Essex RM3 postcode, both my car then(2.0 VW Bora) and hers (1.9 SDI Fabia) ,

both fully comp, courtesy car, No Claims protection, etc etc. Either of us could drive either car for an amazing £790

She had held a full license for just 1 year with 1yrs no claims as a named driver on the Suzuki.

I had 10 years claim free, held licence for about 15 years, nothing else anywhere (we tried, believe me...)

even came close...

We've still got a pretty good deal going with them now , but with the cars in my sig.

No longer being in London helps a bit as I'm in a better postcode insurance wise.

54reg 1.9 modified tdi and 1.9 diesel and a 57reg 2.0 modified petrol 2 seater.

And there's 3 drivers as I've added the mother in law to the policy, me 38, wife 28, mother in law 50something.

Everyone can drive everything EXCEPT my Wifes Mum isn't covered to drive my vRS

Paying £1510 a year fully comp, protected no claims, stereo cover, glass cover, legal assist etc etc

It creeps up a little each year but we did get a rebate for immediately after we moved

house, which we weren't expecting.

In real terms it's simple, £500 each a year to drive (nearly)any of 3 cars. In todays climate

I really consider that a good deal. I know I've banged on but it's how I avoided paying big money

premiums when Mrs Grr was a new driver.

Without doubt yours is the biggest quote I've ever heard of.

I can believe the guy on the phone was embarrased. I mean seriously... Who'd actually pay that?

I can see why there's so many people say "S0d it!" and not bothering at all.

Go for the Morris Minor, at least she can learn a bit about how a car works and they ARE cool.

If it's that or nothing?

Last year I paid 88.72p. Fully comp with breakdown cover!

36 years old.

Compare that to the 400 for each Yeti and 380 I was paying on the Fabia Greenline and it's amazing!

Footman James will insure Miss R in a moggy for a cool...ish £600. It's the only car they will do that deal on though.

Miss R being a 'street cool' teenager has already stated that she really wouldn't want to be seen driving 'one of those'.

Meanwhile.'Dad's Taxis' are still extremely busy...unfortunately. :wall:

I've noticed that not one of the insurance companies/brokers that we have links too down there somewhere, have not made a contribution or comment to this thread.

If everything was just fine and dandy, and I was struggling to decide which mega deal to go for, I'm sure they'd all be in here spouting me me me :bandit:

Looks like out of a choice of old wheels or no wheels it's the latter then. Maybe Dad's taxi is too good. :giggle:

Hmmm i doubt i'd pass my test now: too many bad habits.

As for insurance, there is a lot of apocryphal talk about it and young people getting these sub Grand deals but i am always sceptical. I am 34, got 7 years no claims, drive a bog standard mark one Vrs and am still paying near on £609 fully comp with LV. If anyone knows a better deal PM me.

Tried that line again on Saturday. Rang up FJ's but the price had nearly doubled in 3 months!! ! :wall: Anyway, on yet another recommendation I rang a company in N.Ireland called Diamond Insurance that specialise in wimmin drivers and youngsters. Stand up and be publicly thanked DIAMOND for being polite, helpful and coming back with a still heavy but slightly more palatable £1325 that included a £75 hike due to the sp30's that both I and Mrs Ree have on our licences.

Granted this is a 10 month policy and only tpf and t cover, but when Miss R (hopefully, grades permitting in July) goes to Uni in October, I will receive a not unreasonable approximate £500 refund if I choose to cancel said policy.

She is therefore now proudly driving the Saxo1.4 Furious that I purchased off here last October, and my seeminly never ending drudge through online quotes and 'phone calls is FINALLY at an end!

THREE CHEERS TO DIAMOND INSURANCE EVERYONE!! :cocktail: :ninja::kiss: , and :moon: to the rest of the thieving gets!!

Edited by Mr Ree

Jesus, what a mess. And I though insurance was a robbery over here. Its not as complicated here since the insurance is tied to the car, not the driver. A lost simpler system, especially since teenagers can simply have their parents as the legal owner of their cars until they turn 25 (when the insurance price drops by 50%).
