Felicia - fix it or sell it...

Featured Replies

Fellas,

I have a dilemma. My car, a blue Felicia 1.6 has a few problems such as a slipping clutch & needs a new rear stub axle but I don't know whether to fix it or sell it. It is far too good to break, has t&t & the engine has only done 72000 miles. Trouble is the Islington parking permit is running out & I need to make a decision quick time. If anyone can sort me out an axle or has any better ideas as to what I should do with the car then please call me on 07563 761 353.

Cheers,

Janz.

well..the stub axle itself is an easy replacement/fix...it bolts on! Maybe worth scouring a breakers for the part [if indeed, that is what has failed?]...?

As for a new clutch? Well, again, how would you deal with the job?

Question is, can you afford to buy a replacement car? [given that the felly's value will be diminished by those tow faults alone?]

These sorts of job do need 'to be done' regardless of how much value a car is deemed to have........

so...in effect, what is the car worth to you? I don't mean financially, but in terms of its usefulness, owner satisfaction, etc?

Or...do you think getting rid, then buying another car [ie, someone else's bag of woe?] is the least troublesome way of keeping wheels under bum?

If it were me, I would repair the thing and wring a few more years out of it...after all, felly's are pretty rock-bottom in the value stakes, so it won't owe you anything in the long run.....

I have to balance it out like this: the car is costing me around a hundred quid a month when I factor in all the costings such as insurance, tax, parking permit etc. I can do all the mechanical work although it'll have to be done at the roadside so the clutch will be hard work but I can live with it slipping for now. A replacement car isn't on the cards 'cos we have Zipcar membership (it had to be done - we needed to get to a wedding up north). So in effect the car is now going to be surplus to requirements & I'm considering sticking it up on ebay. I'd offer it for sale on here but you have to have freedom membership to sell stuff. I still need the axle though so the car can be driven 'cos I'll not get much for it if the buyer has to tow/lift it. I don't want to scrap it 'cos its too good for that but I'm a bit stuck for ideas so it might end up in the crusher. Anyone got any idea how much its worth to the scrappies?

For what it's worth, I second alastairq - fix it. That is unless you have a repacement car lined up that is know by you to be a good 'un and is cheaper to buy than repairing the felly. I certainly wouldn't base the sale on a parking permit unless you're hanging your driving gloves up altogether, surely a permit could be swiched to a different motor if necessary in the future?

Ahh, cool UMA. I've been a bit busy restoring an old Honda Cub but if you got a result with the Bristol thing I'm still in the meerkat for an axle & some other bits...
