Coolant / Windscreen washer problem

Featured Replies

WHOOPS! You'll never believe what I did today, I went to fill up my empty windscreen washer tank with fluid and ended up filling it up with engine coolant!

What should I do (short of draining the system). Would diluting it and manually spraying it out work before filling it with actual windscreen washer?

Cheers, J

PS. They were the same colour fluid and I didn't look!!

empty it out mate, it will just make the screen all smeary, or pump it all out thru the rear washer as it won't matter so much then

Awesome, thanks :)

I would not even consider pumping it out via any of the windscreen jets.

Many engine coolants contain paint corrosive additives and could possibly damage paint work.

Hi, I agree with Ramonford. In the past I've just syphoned out the contents with a suitably long tube.

Avoiding prolonged contact with the paintwork is the trick.

I'd stick a hose into the reservoir and wash it out that way as it overflows. Quicker than pumping it through.

Just pop the pump out, stick a hose in the top and let it run! It'll flush off everthing that was on the paint for 2 seconds as well.

Personally I would just get a length of washer tubing, pull the feed pipe off that goes to the front washer jets from the pump (top, the bottom pipe goes to the rear washer jets if fitted), attach the long piece of washer tubing to that then use the washer pump to pump it out to a separate container away from the car.. Simples.

Except it says he has a fabia which needs the wheelarch liner removing to get at the pump . The amount of antifreeze he has put in won't harm the paint but he could always wash it straight off again

Ah, my mistake. When I read the post I assumed it was about an 'oldie' given that it's posted in the 'oldies corner' instead of the Fabia forum. :giggle: :giggle:
