Unsure about my vRS

Featured Replies

I got my vRS back in October and I am very pleased with it apart from the following problem, I noticed that it seemed a bit wallowy (is that even a word) and I was unsure about the front end as it seemed the steering was like stirring a bowl of porridge, it got so bad at one point that I thought I had a flat tyre.

After a few posts on here and checking underneath for any lose parts etc it was suggested that I change the console bushes etc etc.

So I fitted a complete set of Superpro bushes front and rear.

However I was driving into work this morning and the car is better but it still has this odd feeling, at one point it felt like it was doing a 4 wheel slide and another time the front end stepped out. Now if I was hammering it then fair enough but I was doing 30, it was cold but there didnt seem to be any ice.

I am thinking maybe shocks are on there way out or could it be tyres or something else I havn't thought of.

Any ideas as to what it could be as I am rapidly losing confidence in the car as I feel it is too twitchy and wants to step out at anytime.

Have you had the wheel alignment checked?

No I havnt had this done yet. I thought it could be this but didnt want to spend money on this if I need to change other suspension parts and get it done again.

Could wheel alignment really make the car drive this badly.

Are you looking to change your suspension anytime soon ie lower it?

When you fitted uprated bushes did you do FARB bushes?

If your lowering it I would hold off the alignment until you do.

Yes did the complete set of Superpro FARB, console, front wishbone, dogbone, and rear swing arm. Wasn't planning on lowering it as its a daily commuter and just wanted a pretty standard car without a really harsh ride.

Check tyre pressure, check the strut bolts are tight, bent wishbone? Do the wheels look visually straight? track rod ends?

If your not lowering it then go get a free alignment check, they do them at a few places around here kwik fit etc. Then if its out get it done.

As tim says, check psi in tyres.

Thanks for all the replies.

I checked tyre pressures last Friday and they were all fine. Will go and get an alignment check.

Are the standard shocks Gas or Oil filled on the vRS?

Oil

Sounds really odd. Tyre tread all ok? Decent brand? I remember having some sh1te tyres on an old MG and it felt like it could have gone sideways at any minute. New set of decent tyres made a world of difference.

Deffo get it checked at a garage for your own safety and peace of mind. Last thing you need is to be going sideways. :S

It has winter tyres on at the moment, forget the actual size but its something like 195/55 R15 on steel rims. Think they are Semperit and plenty of tread left.

I guess they could be a problem and if it turns out to be these I will never buy them again.

What's the weather like where you are?

Typical British thing to ask, but winter tyres are designed to be softer in cold temperatures. When it warms up, they do feel a bit wallowy as the tread blocks flex more.

I am in the Western part of Germany. Very similar weather to UK. Its hovering around 0 degrees at the minute.

As the car ever been in a crash mate I had a 106 gti what had been smashed at the back quarter and that use to be very twitchy on corners
