It is so they don't dazzle at night since LEDs produce a harsh direct light perfect for daytime, not so good at full brightness for night. Same happens when you have auto lights and the headlights come on.

Well that explains that then!! :) Cheers gsp

You'll also see that when an Audi indicates it goes dim on that side. I think they discovered they were too close to the indicator and the brightness prevented the indicator from being clearly visible. Style over practicality :-)

Jaysus the things im learning today!! :))

u can also do this on the fl vrs via vcds coding - make the drl dim on the side the indicator is on.

i've done it to mine.

very handy in my opinion.

why? Indicators no where near drls.

It looks cool B) and mostly due to the 'cos i can' factor :giggle:

What better reason could there be!

true, but u'd b surprised at how much more easier it makes to see the indicator.

the vrs drls r very bright - by dimming the side that has the indicator on, takes away the attention drawn by the drl and provides the indicator with more "limelight".

i travel on public transport a lot, and i've noticed on a lot of drl equipped cars like the merc, some kia (optima & sorento), and the new ford mondeo, even the other vrs - that the flashing indicators aren't as obvious with the drl on full power. i'll notice "a car with drls" approaching in the corner of my vision, or when i glance over my shoulder, but its not till i stop and look properly at the car that i notice the indicator is on, flashing away.

true they r some distance apart, but end of the day - a drl is far more powerful in brightness compared to an indicator globe.

"cos i can" factor - well, i won't deny that. anything that helps.

.....that's why.

I've been pondering.... I can see why the DRLs need to be dimed when on low beam, but is there a way to enable them to go back to maximum brightness when main beam is activated (possibly in combination with the fogs)? My logic being that you want as much light on the road as possible and shouldn't be blinding anyone or you wouldn't have main beam on anyway......

Probably not.

And LEDs don't really project any beam that would be beneficial in the dark.

They are very good at making themselves seen but not very good at providing enough useful light so you can see.

do you remember what coding page it was on in vcds?

do you remember what coding page it was on in vcds?

It’s under 09 - Cent. Elect, not sure of the Byte or Bit, but it will only take a few seconds to find it

great thanks :) will try it when i get my car back

Just to annoy the hell out of everyone that hasn't got them. Load of absolute nonsense and glitzy tat.

Strange how we all seemed to have survived thus far without them in the past haven't we?

One of the main reasons I've discovered how to switch the wretched things off during the daytime running mode......permanently.

Right, I'll go and fetch my tin hat now in readiness for the usual barrage of abuse on this touchy subject . :moon:

Change the record.

That argument could be used for anything when it was 1st introduced though couldn’t it?

  • Seatbelts
  • Indicators
  • ABS
  • 3rd brake light

They are ALL safety items, are you saying just because we survived before they were introduced that they are a bad thing?

I was very much a hater when they were 1st introduced, but I can now see the benefit from them, people are too caught up with other things in their life nowadays, texting, talking on the phone, listening to music etc making yourself more visible can only be a good thing right?

(Talking about pedestrians on the phone not other drivers!)

Change the record.

Up to CD's now actually.

All valid and worthwhile safety features/equipment that have been PROVED to save lives, not forgetting airbags too btw.

Until I see some statistical proof that these nonsensical..... (IN MY OPINION :wall: ).... DRL's have actually contributed to saving someones life, i will be remaining totally unconvinced.

IF they are just so so important to safety then, just how come the user....certainly on the Octavia vRS....has the option to turn them off?

I don't see such an option for the above mentioned and valid safety features.

Motorbikes are an exception on this issue, granted.

Yer, we did OK with seat belts for a while

The human race didn't come anywhere near extinction while there were no drink-drive limits

ABS brakes were added - yet somehow we weren't all dying without them

Requirement of 3rd brake light - I don't remember hundreds of rear-end accidents before they were made compulsory

Before ESP becomes a legal requirement in all cars - we all did quite well before ESP.

Sorry - the validity of your argument was what exactly?

Oh and all new cars (new models, not re-hashes) from now will have DRL's that CANNOT be switched off so really you should calm down and get used to them.

*Edit*

See somebody decided to already call you up on the very same points

This. Its getting boring.

I like my DRL's but Audi do the best :-)

only on current Vrs. on the mk3 octavia and mk3 vrs models you will not be able to switch them off

I don't have a problem with drl's as such. it's the brightness and the dazzle that you get from them in the day time. why cant they just run at the lower power setting all the time, there is no need for them to be so bright.
