Misfire on boost?!

Featured Replies

Hi guys need a bit of advice..

Took my car to a local garage whom I know very well and trust completely (which is rare for me lol) to change the spark plugs to a colder grade plug and also track rod ends.

After test driving the car he informed me that there was a misfire logged on his diagnostic tester relating to the MAF sensor.

So i've drove to work today MAF plugged in and yes on Throttle wide open I was getting that MAF 'cough' most noticeable under full load in 5th gear on the motorway from roll on throttle.. Though bugger because I've just recently changed it for the 3rd time (bought a 2nd hand one cheap on here.. genuine Bosch)

Anyway, after work I've unplugged the MAF to drive it around on a base setting again until i cut my losses and buy a genuine bosch MAF (drove like that for 2 months with no issues what so ever.

Anyway the car is still missing under heavy load so I'm guessing it's not the MAF. Engine management light flashes if I really give it the boost but because MAF unplugged I've got the EML all the time now..

Plugged in the fault code reader and all I'm showing is MAF issues.

Anyway, any suggestions other than the MAF?!

Would the car ever misfire with the MAF unplugged if it was just the MAF?

Thanks guys

To start with, I would regap the plugs to .6 - .65. Have any of the coils started to pop back up out of the cover?

Plugs are gapped at 0.7mm as per the pack.

And that's a good suggestion, I need a coilpack hold down kit really

Do you think the plugs could be wrong? they were suggested to be used on mapped cars.. one heat grade colder

If you have misfire around 3000 rpm where AUQ engine have highest torque,it`s probably coil(s). Log via vagcom misfire counter and watch the counters (4). If it starts to rise, there is your problem.

Test has to be done under load, 3rd gear pull would be OK.

Good luck!

As I suggest, regap the plugs to .6 and see if the misfire is still there.

TBH this won't tell you anything apart from there is a misfire, which has already been established. It may well be one of the coils and possible a host of other problems. Start the process of elimination with the plugs and go from there

Yeah you right, but if you rev the engine and it doesnt misfire then the problem could be plugs or coils. Especially if it misfire under full boost around 3000-3500 rpm

ive seen this a few times after plug change and has turned out to be a duff plug

take plugs out and replace with the oem ones wich are perfectly fine in your car by the way you dont need cooler plugs etc etc etc

I'd defo say its coils . Sounds just like what happened to me last month

Hi guys all sorted.. I managed to get it to log a fault down to misfire cylinder 1.. surprise surprise cylinder 1 coil pack was shot.

100% glad I followed the advice of everyone on here and always carry a spare with me.

Apart from now when I need to get another lol :wonder:

Thanks everyone.

The reason I didn't think it was coils was that the 1st time the car shot a coil it hardly idled etc... this time it drove perfectly apart from throttle wide open!

Guessing the new plugs put a bit of extra strain on the coil possibly

:D

I all ways have at least one coil in the trunk

Sometimes a coil will first start to fail where the engine has the most torque and boost.

Before mapping the car .. nothing.

After mapping.. 2 x coils, 3 MAF sensors and 4 spark plugs, coolant temp sensor

Extra work for the win.. worth it to be fair

Coilpacks, CTS, & plugs is not unusual to have to replace, but 3 MAF sensors is very odd unless they weren't gen VAG or you have an over oiled K&N fitted.
