Advice Needed

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have noticed that when I was turning my steering it was heavier/ some resistance. I took it to Halfords today and they have told me they don't know what is wrong with it, and they need to call an electrician out which would cost me £70. I have told them to not bother with that for now. Does anyone know of any garages in Nottingham that will be able to find out what is wrong with it without charging me £70?

Also, does anyone know what is wrong with my car? The Mechanic said he thinks the power steering is losing power if that helps.

Finally my car is struggling to start, it had been making a weird noise when turning the key since my auntie gave me the car a few years ago, but recently it has been taking a bit longer to start, like I turn the key and nothing happens for a bit then about 2 seconds later it starts, sometimes it makes a noise like its about to start but then doesnt do anything. Is that the starter motor?

As you can probably tell I am not very knowledgeable about cars.

Thanks in advance

Matt

Re the steering it could be a dodgy steering angle sensor if this hasn't been replaced already, but how old is the battery? The PAS relies heaviliy on the battery and they usually only last 4-6 years, so it may need replacing.

Also, do you get the battery symbol when starting your car? If the battery is not charging, check the the load signal wire, otherwise it could be a dodgy alternator.

Hope this helps matey...

Regarding the steering - have you checked tyre pressures? Sounds very basic but if they are low they can have a big affect

Rule 1 - don't use Halfords

Rule 2 - please don't use Halfords

Rule 3 - Take the car to a local independant garage who know what they are talking about!

lol, I know halfords aren't the best, but with me being a student in Nottingham I dont know any independent garages. I have found one through this website now and will give them a ring tomorrow.

Regarding the battery and the angle sensor I dont know if either of them have ever been replaced. I have had the car since May 2009 after my auntie gave it me so I will ask her if she knows if either have been replaced.

I will check about the battery light when I get my car back later.

Tyre pressures are good I checked them a couple of weeks ago.

The fact that they were alright 2 weeks ago doesn't mean they are alright now. That said I would suspect the battery.

I had my battery/alternator checked today at kwik fit and there is no problems. there is a 61% start capacity.

I had the electrics tested at an independent garage today and he couldn't find any problems with that. He did say that their was a possibilty that the power steering fluid might be low. I am going to take the battery out and have a look to see if it is in the near future.

Could this be a problem? and can anyone else think of anything else that might be wrong?

thanks
