Skoda Felicia 1.6 overheating strange problem

Featured Replies

Hi

Week back the alternator has stopped working so had to change it.

My Felicia has developed very strange problem, after changing the alternator the water has stopped running around and the fan isn`t turning on either. So it is overheating very badly. Took it to the garage and had the thermostat changed and it all seemed fine when tested, when picking it up from the garage and driving back home it started overheating again even though I was driving and not being stud still, so I have turned heating on full to keep it cool and drove straight back to the garage. Again the same problem, water not running around and fan not turning, after few minutes at all suddenly started working, water started going round fan turning, so I left the garage and headed home but it started overheating again.

It just starts and stops running the water around on its own, as one pipe is hot and another cold. I am taking the Felicia back tomoz to have another look at it, does anyone had this strange problem before? any hints or tips?

Thanks

could be the waterpump has broken, its quite common for the impellor to break off the shaft so it doesn't push the water around.

Or could be the thermostat they fitted is faulty.

Does the heater give hot air still?

Does sound like a dodgy water pump.

yeah the heater does give a lot hot air and after thinking all night about it - didnt sleep at all, I think so too its gonna be the water pump

it turns out its not the water pump as the water is being pumped bt not around then engine, I think its the thermostat even though I had it replaced

you misinterpret the function of the thermostat squire! The water is always pumped around the engine regardless of wether you have a thermostat there or not, wether it's working or not too.... The water pump should constantly circulate the coolant around the engine and heater any time the engine is running, the thermostat is there purely to regulate how much coolant passes through the radiator.

However it's not unheard of for thermostats to be faulty. it is possible to get a hot climate stat for these engines too from vw, the 16v engine in my pickup uses the same thermostat housing as the 1.6 felicia engine and I have a hot climate thermostat fitted in mine which does keep the temp more stable on a higher powered engine.

If the coolant is circulating around the heater, it suggests that the water pump is pumping. The thermostat on the 1.6 has a central pin, the pin is against the thermostat cover which prevents it from moving and allowing the thermostat to open. What frequently happens is that the pin wears the cover, so instead of the thermostat opening, the pin moves and the thermostat stays closed, with the resulting no coolant circulation through the radiator and over the coolant fan thermal switch. It might just need a new thermostat cover.

Thanks, will inspect the cover today, sorry for late reply bt was ill so had to recover first. Thanks for the advice, I would be lost without briskoda as I got very little experience and Felicia is my first car
