Amundsen Satnav - any good?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys. Long time lurker on the forum. What a brilliant source of Yeti knowledge and insight.

I'm at the stage where I have decided to get a Yeti, at long last. But, I am thinking of going down the 'ex-demo' route as I wouldn't have the patience for the huge lead times. I had decided my must haves were for it to be a 4x4 diesel, elegance spec, with Columbus satnav and a sunroof.

After scouring the approved used cars online, it appears I might struggle! Looks like I might have to give up on the roof.

There are one or two which include the Amundsen satnav. Trouble is I had the VW version of the Columbus on a golf and I wonder if I have now been spoiled! How do people find the functionality and usability in comparison? I believe it includes 7 digit postcodes and that it would be possible to stream music over Bluetooth, but I wonder whether people find the smaller screen ok.

Also, does anybody know if the Amundsen includes TMC info. It seems from other poss that there is also an Amundsen + but I'm not sure whether that is likely to be on a November 2011 Yeti, or how I would tell the difference!

I have test driven a 170 and a 140 dsg and was really impressed by both. Very nice, comfortable cars to drive. But my fears over the quality of the Amundsen are nagging me to look elsewhere. Don't let me go to the Nissan dealers....please.....!

Thanks.

Hi Sweens and welcome to the Forum

All the info on the Amundsen is in the manual. The + version is simply DAB+, a newer version, as against original DAB which is not forward compatible with DAB+.

Good luck in finding a vehicle that ticks all your boxes.

Coming from a Ford system, I find the RNS315 pretty poor.

Guessing the Columbus/RNS510 is more feature packed?

Hi & Welcome

I recently bought a 1.4 TSE SE with the Amundsen Sat Nav and I'm very pleased with it. Not familiar with the Columbus, so I can't compare them. It does have TMC, but I don't have Bluetooth on mine or DAB.

I posted an article recently about how I copied my music to SD card for playing on the Amundsen which may be of interest -

Good luck with your search.

If you are used to the Columbus, I would hang in there and find one with the Columbus fitted.

I have the CR140DSG and wouldn't choose any other. I will only drive autos now.

Like Nickel I have the Amunsden but have no experience of the Columbus to compare it with. The screen is big enough for purpose and the functionality has not caused me any concern so far (I've only had it a week). The only gripe I would have is some gliches in the map data but I suspect that would be the same in the Columbus as both woould use the same which I suspect might be "Teleatlas". I have also transfered the map data and my music over to an SD card. I wouldn't let the availability of a sat nav influence my decision of a Yeti v a Nissan.

I have an Amundsen in my Elegance and although I have only used it a couple of times in anger, it seems to work fine. The screen size is not really an issue as you get voice directions and concise visual ones through the Maxidot display so you don't need to use the colour screen much other than to set the navigation up in the first place. One thing I do like is how quickly it will recalculate a route if you ignore the initial directions - I tried this as it has been slow on other sat nav systems I have used - without too many "turn around" and "recalculating" messages.

Thanks for all the replies. It's great to get informed views.

It seems the main differences are the smaller screen and the lack of hard drive. I think that enfieldcr is right in saying that screen size isn't so much of an issue with the addition of the maxidot directions.

And I don't tend to upload my music as I prefer to stream from my iPhone using Bluetooth.

Testing the Yeti tomorrow so, all being well, I could be joining the proud ranks of Yeti owners very soon!
