Rough start up from cold

Featured Replies

Evening boys and girls....

During these recent cold mornings / evenings i've been having some trouble with the old barge.

When starting up, the engine splutters pretty bad REGARDLESS if the secondary air intake is on or not (yes i know it sounds noisey)

When its warm, the car is fine and pulls like a train still holding 20psi of boost.

Pretty sure i can hear some sort of air leak around the manifold area when its spluttering.

Does anyone know why its doing this? Coil packs were replaced last year through the recall, its had new plugs and a new MAF (been on for about 6 months now).

ANY help would be muchly appreciated.

Thanks!

Coolant temp sensor? Can you VAG-com it and log the coolant temp readings at startup?

Sounds like it has anti-lag!!!

As chicken said, it could be a coolant temp sensor, or possibly even the SAI valve (not the pump).

Did the plugs get gapped properly?

Anti lag, lol...i wish :)

Not sure if the plugs were gapped properly chap, Left it with skoda whilst they did the coilpacks. The've been fault free for 3,000ish miles.

Im GUESSING it has to be a sensor of some sort as when she's warm, she's happy.

Ive just orded a SAI blanking plate along with resistor to do away with the pump. Might have a wander down to the garage and run the logs on the vag com. Does the car need to be stationary or moving?

I'd just start the logging and then start the car, run the logging for a minute or so then stop it.

Will see how i get on tomorrow, cheers bud.

No worries. If the CTS is working right it should show pretty cold temps on a cold startup (probably a few degrees above zero in this weather) but if they're unusually warm then its a pretty good sign its knackered.

My cars also rough on start up sounds like its gasping for air , but after a few mins on idle its fine . This really got worse for me after i installed induction on my car , havent looked into the problem as i now just leave it running before i go out .

They can sound rough at startup due to the SAI (secondary air intake) causing the engine note and high idle - can be caused by leaks in the air pump to the engine. However this one above sounds especially rough!

When you installed the induction kit what did you do about the plastic hose from the secondary air pump that used to fit onto the side of the airbox? As this is probably whats making the sucking noise, its sucking in air for the pump to inject into the exhaust. I think that pipe should really have its own little mini filter on it (as per Robs photo here)

either that or remove the secondary air system altogether.

Interesting thing happened today. Last night I refitted my engine cover and I've not had the problem today.....even with the secondary air pump kicking in. Possible condensation getting to the coilpacks or sparks?..

Sorry for posting on your thread mate b4 i go on

My secondary feed has its own pipe into the induction it just does it every morining from cold wont take the foor and pops a little you have to rev it hard for a second then it clears

Plugged it into VAG com software and checked the coolant temp sensor and was going up as normal, started at -2 deg and worked its way upto 90deg.

I'm convinced i have some form of split hose under the inlet manifold as I'm sure i can smell fumes coming through the heater vents whilst the engines warming up and spluttering.

Whilst the engine is spluttering my boost gauge gives off a smaller vacuum number than normal, once warm it idles as normal the the boost gauge returns to normal.

My question is, what else apart from the SAI runs to help the engine warm up? :wonder:

While the SAI pump is running the combi valve on the side of the exhaust manifold is open so the air is being pumped into the exhaust, also the variable valve timing is working, the valves open for slightly longer so the exhaust gasses get into the exhaust quicker

Had a good look around the engine tonight and found this offender. Would explain the smell of fumes in the cabin.

have you done a throttle body clean? When I got my VRS it was rough as anything on start up, really lumpy, cleaned the TB and it's been sweet ever since.

Not yet mike. Thats another job for this weekend. Need to order a TB gasket from skoda.

Plans for this weekend consist of:

Wash her,

SAI removal

Fit breather

Do a throttle body clean

That'll explain the fumes! Nice split there!

Are you replacing just that one or the one under the manifold as well? That has a habit of splitting too - you'll see it when you do the SAI delete and take the plate off the front of the mani.

I'll have an inspection of that one under the manifold when i do away with the jet turbine. I read its a pain in the arse to change tho?

Good shout mate  Probably worth checking them all

It can be, make sure you have some cutters that will go through hoseclips easily as when I did mine it took a lot of messing with a flat blades screwdriver and pliers to get the old clips off

Where to i find the replacement pipe chap?

Awesome GTI do a pair of uprated silicon replacements for both pipes:

Bit dear but they will give a Briskoda discount and these pipes won't split again like the OEM ones. You can get replacement OEM ones I think the smaller one was £17+ vat when I did mine

Cheers guys, ordered a replacement the other night. Cant wait for it to turn up. Starting to get embarassing starting her up in public LOL!
