BT Fon Blackberry App

Featured Replies

Got an E-mail from BT today saying that a BT Fon app for Blackberry was available on Blackberry App World.

And it was. So downloaded, installed and re-booted machine. No Joy.

My Blackberry can see both the BT Fon and Openzone wi-fi signals coming from my Home Hub 2, but when I click on either of those entries, after a long wait, I get "Can't find IP" message.

A bit weird, as doing the same on my laptop (Using a very old wireless flash card to connect) from the same location always gets a connection and brings-up the BT Fon sign-in screen.

Any ideas ?

Deleted app, re-booted, re-installed, re-booted. Same story. Wonder if its SSID related ?

The BT Fon app works partially in the absence of a web connection but isn't finding the GPS signal either.

The android one has gone downhill. Used to work perfectly but now (updated version) takes ages and then reports that it cannot identify the hotspot.

Guess they really don't test properly anymore...

The iPhone app works a treat, emoticon-0144-nod.gif

I may have a problem with my BB's GPS receiver. It always used to work indoors, now it isn't - now long and lat values not showing. Also, the software, in the Options/device/locations directory, which controls the GPS enable/disable button is non-operable. This seems to have occured since updating the OS late last year. Maybe the Fon app gets hung-up waiting for an input that isn't there. I'll try doing a progressive unload on the various service books and see if the GPS problem can't be eradicated.

All you read about Blackberry on the web are these petty fogging problems - no wonder they are going under. BT are much the same. I recall that the drivers and desktop apps they produced for early PC wi-fi hardware, that was sold under their logo, was always giving problems and used to run better under native windows drivers.

I suspect that what's happened is that some Dilbert's boss has, to save money, instructed that the Android and Blackberry Fon apps were just re-casts/mods of the Iphone app.

Looks like I've solved it, but, as usual, without fully understanding or being able to validate what I did.

A web article I read suggested that HomeHubs cache IP addresses, so that when new services are added it needs to be reset so that the cache is remade. So, per the web advice,I closed down all the wi-fi connections on the Blackberry and logged-out, then RESET the Home Hub. I then logged back on to the Home Hub (After re-making the basic local settings) and then logged-on to my BT Fon account using the PC and DE-ACTIVATED BT Fon service. Yes De-ACTIVATED. Then I logged out of the the BT FON account, immediately re-logged on and RE-ACTIVATED the BT Fon service.

I then started-up the Blackberry did a wireless scan, found the wireless signals for BT Fon and BT Openzone, selected the BT Fon signal and activated a connection. Job done. I was able to switch between Openzone and Fon quite freely and access web addresses without difficulty.

However, despite resetting-up my main private local secure wireless network on the Home Hub following the Home Hub RESET and re-booting it and the Blackberry a couple of times, the Blackberry did not detect it. Eventually, I established that if I SAVED all the individual Wi-fi connections and then disabled those I didn't want to use i.e. Fon and Openzone at that moment, then the BB would detect the Private Wireless secure network, activate a connection and automatically log-on. This equally applied to the other two connections.

I also found out that the neighbourhood is saturated with Wifi signals (3-6 depending on signal varaibility) and that they are all operating on Channel 7 - conicidentally this seems to be the channel that the Home Hub selects if left to do so automatically. So I manually selected another distant channel and, now, all seems good.

The GPS seemed to correct itself with no intervention from me and is now happily parameter passing to the Bt Fon app, but, obviously only when Bt Fon or Openzone is activated as the wireless connection.
