Oil temp in maxidot, a question

Featured Replies

Since having my car switched over to fixed servicing last week I've noticed that the oil temp display in maxidot just shows ---

I rang the dealer today to see if someone had omitted to connect a lead or something and was told by service that the display only shows a temp if the car is on variable servicing, is this true?

FALSE! Mine is fixed and showes oil temp, it was a new feature on the 59 Octys and onwards.

Thanks, as I suspected.

Oh well, that's another stern letter to the MD at the dealership I'll have to draft tomorrow.

Why do people have to lie :wonder:

A post on the Yeti forum suggests that its normal for the oil temp to not show on fixed interval servicing since the sensor that monitors the temperature is disabled. A dealer cannot normally override this behaviour, but find someone with VCDS and they can enable it for fixed interval as well.

Thanks, that saves me making a pratt of myself tomorrow :giggle:

Another call to Mikeholroyd :)

The setting in also on the dealer diagnostic machine in self diagnosis,

17 - dash cluster

10 - adaptation

Setting extended service schedule (SID or ESI) or words to that effect

Bottom box is poor or good oil quality, click that and another box drops down

Oil sensor connected or not connected to dash cluster, select the first option

Oil temp now appears on the dash.

This is in addition to enabling fixed servicing.

Thank goodness for this great community. I'm sure that there are cracking dealers out there but I'm not terribly impressed with mine. Surely the dealer should at least be checking whether owners want this sort of thing activated or not I mean, what's the point of having an oil temp read out if it doesn't give any information?

To be fair most haven't realised when you change it to fixed servicing it turns off so don't know you have to switch it back on. It's become habit for me to check now even when cars don't have maxidot.

I get what you're saying Tech1e but dealers should know all that there is to know about the cars that they sell and / or service.

Thanks again all

Yep and the country shouldn't be in an economic crisis, fuel shouldn't cost so much and chicken crisps should taste of chicken.

All good in an ideal world, except us poor sods in the dealer are always learning after they change things on cars.

You're not having the last word though, I have a wife that gets away with that :D

mine always shows "---" for the first 5 mins or so of driving. after that it shows.

the maxidot will only show when the oil temp has gone above 50 degrees celcius.

if its below 50, like on cold starts, it will b a while before u see it on maxidot.

I had an issue with this recently. There are 3 service regimes, variable, fixed without oil monitoring and fixed with oil monitoring.

I believe the servicing code you ask for is QG2 service (fixed with oil monitoring) If the person on the front desk doesn't understand, ask them to put it on as a note to the service tech.

I also believe if the service is reset on the car it will default to fixed without oil monitoring. It has to be reset on the service dept computer. vagcom?

Regards.

Yeah cheers, I'm aware of the first few minutes being blank but after doing a hundred or so miles yesterday I decided to investigate further

Thanks, I'm going to have my friendly VCDS Briski chappie have a look first

Its only been standard since 2009 so not like its a new thing lol! Staff training issue I assume.

Stupid question but where is this normally?

I've never seen it (either a blank number or an actual readout) on mine. I've got an LE so (AFAIK) facelift innards......

Mine is a 12 plate CR Vrs on fixed as I got the 3 free service package. My oil temp works once it passes 50c.

Not sure if that helps.

But where is it? Is it in the main MFD (i.e.between current MPG and travel time)?

If you have maxidot and on variable service it should be active, but you may have to select it to be displayed in the setup on maxidot, as many of the items on the MFD section can be turned on/off so that when you cycle through you only get the ones you turn on.

I think by default (there is an old thread on this somewhere) you need to be on variable service to see it, but if on fixed there is a service mode which is fixed with oil sensor active. (not the default the dealer normally uses).

Thanks. I looked through all my MFD display options this morning and anything that can be turned on, is. I was told the car was on variable when I bought it, but service info says 1100 miles or 56 days so it'll be going on fixed soon as I have the service package. Will try to get it activated then......

Worked a treat, thanks.

Old thread revival - but I take it that this is only available on the full Maxidot cluster and not on the standard cluster ?

Thanks.

Good question. And the answer is????
